Background: Patients admitted for rehabilitation often lack sufficient natural light to entrain their circadian rhythm.
Objective: Installed diurnal naturalistic light may positively influence the outcome of depressive mood, anxiety, and cognition in such patients.
Methods: A quasi-randomized controlled trial. Ninety stroke patients in need of rehabilitation were randomized between May 1, 2014, and June 1, 2015 to either a rehabilitation unit equipped entirely with always on naturalistic lighting (IU), or to a rehabilitation unit with standard indoor lighting (CU).Examinations were performed at inclusion and discharge. The following changes were investigated: depressive mood based on the Hamilton Depression scale (HAM-D6) and Major Depression Inventory scale (MDI), anxiety based on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), cognition based on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) and well-being based on the Well-being Index (WHO-5).
Results: Depressive mood (MDI p = 0.0005, HAM-D6 p = 0.011) and anxiety (HADS anxiety p = 0.045) was reduced, and well-being (WHO-5 p = 0.046) was increased, in the IU at discharge compared to the CU. No difference was found in cognition (MoCA p = 0.969).
Conclusions: This study is the first to demonstrate that exposure to naturalistic light during admission may significantly improve mental health in rehabilitation patients. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

The external validity of the Morningness-Eveningness Scale for Children was analysed via objective measures of skin temperature, light exposure and motor activity with the ambulatory circadian monitoring methodology. A total of 138 adolescents (57 boys and 81 girls) aged 12-13 years, who in addition to completing the Morningness-Eveningness Scale for Children to determine their circadian typology wore a wrist activity device (Kronowise 3.0; Kronohealth SL) during school days and a weekend, participated.

The vestibular system is integral to behavior; the loss of peripheral vestibular function leads to disabling consequences, such as blurred vision, dizziness, and unstable posture, severely limiting activities of daily living. Fortunately, the vestibular system's well-defined peripheral structure and well-understood encoding strategies offer unique opportunities for developing sensory prostheses to restore vestibular function. While these devices show promising results in both animal models and implanted patients, substantial room for improvement remains.

Many of the complex behaviours of humans involve the production of nonadjacent dependencies between sequence elements, which in part can be generated through the hierarchical organization of sequences. To understand how these structural properties of human behaviours evolved, we can gain valuable insight from studying the sequential behaviours of nonhuman animals. Among the behaviours of nonhuman apes, tool use has been hypothesised to be a domain of behaviour which likely involves hierarchical organization, and may therefore possess nonadjacent dependencies between sequential actions.

We appraise other people's emotions by combining multiple sources of information, including somatic facial/body reactions and the surrounding context. A wealthy literature revealed how people take into account contextual information in the interpretation of facial expressions, but the mechanisms mediating such influence still need to be duly investigated. Across two experiments, we mapped the neural representations of distinct (but comparably unpleasant) negative states, pain and disgust, as conveyed by naturalistic facial expressions or contextual sentences.
