The isotopes of thorium (Th) and neodymium (Nd) are used as tracers in oceanography, and are key parameters in the international GEOTRACES program. The very low concentrations of Th and Nd as well as the reactive nature of Th isotopes makes the analysis of seawater samples a complex process. Analysis requires time-consuming pre-concentration from over 5 L of seawater. We describe a method to simultaneously pre-concentrate dissolved Th and Nd from acidified seawater samples using the Nobias PA1L chelating resin. Prior to pre-concentration, hydrofluoric acid is added to the sample to stabilise Th, ammonium acetate buffer added (0.05 M), pH adjusted to 4.75, and then finally the prepared sample is pumped through the Nobias resin at a rate of 15 ml min. Up to 6 samples can be processed simultaneously. Following elution in 3 M HNO, both elements are chromatographically separated and determined using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry. Oxidation of the sample between all column separation steps, including after the initial Nobias resin, is important for obtaining maximum elemental recoveries. The method has >90% recovery with blank levels typically <10 pg for Th and <70 pg for Nd. Accuracy is excellent, as our reported values generally agree within 1% of the GEOTRACES intercalibration standards. The long-term analysis of these materials also indicates excellent reproducibility. The pre-concentration of Th and Nd using the Nobias resin is a time saving option compared to the widely used iron co-precipitation technique. Sample handling is also reduced, decreasing the risk of sample contamination. The simplicity of our suggested pre-concentration procedure makes it possible to be applied at sea.

Evolution of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation since the last glaciation: model simulations and relevance to present and future.

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and the associated water masses have changed dramatically during the glacial-interglacial cycle. Here, I review some recent progress in the modelling of the AMOC and water masses since the Last Glacial Maximum and discuss the relevance of these past AMOC studies to the present and future AMOC study. Recent studies suggested that Atlantic water masses were constrained by carbon isotopes (δC) and neodymium isotopes (ε), while the strength of the AMOC better was constrained by protactinium/thorium ratio (Pa/Th) and the spatial gradient of calcite oxygen isotopes (δO).

The samarium-146 (Sm)-neodymium-142 (Nd) short-lived decay system (half-life of 103 million years) is a powerful tracer of the early mantle-crust evolution of planetary bodies. However, an increased Nd/Nd in modern terrestrial rocks relative to chondrite meteorites has been proposed to be caused by nucleosynthetic anomalies, obscuring early Earth's differentiation history. We use stepwise dissolution of primitive chondrites to quantify nucleosynthetic contributions on the composition of chondrites.

Non-KREEP origin for Chang'e-5 basalts in the Procellarum KREEP Terrane.

Mare volcanics on the Moon are the key record of thermo-chemical evolution throughout most of lunar history. Young mare basalts-mainly distributed in a region rich in potassium, rare-earth elements and phosphorus (KREEP) in Oceanus Procellarum, called the Procellarum KREEP Terrane (PKT)-were thought to be formed from KREEP-rich sources at depth. However, this hypothesis has not been tested with young basalts from the PKT.

Dust deposited on residential and agricultural lands can have serious consequences for the ecosystem when toxic trace elements are present. This study aimed to assess the ecological risk of the trace elements found in the deposited dust around the Mehdi Abad Pb/Zn mine, Yazd, Iran, using several modified pollution indices. The dust samples were collected by the grid method and a Marble Dust Collector (MDCO) sampler to evaluate the concentration of thirty trace elements: nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), barium (Ba), beryllium (Be), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), dysprosium (Dy), lanthanum (La), lithium (Li), niobium (Nb), tin (Sn), neodymium (Nd), praseodymium (Pr), rubidium (Rb), Ferrum (Fe), sulfur (S), selenium (Se), strontium (Sr), tantalum (Ta), terbium (Tb), zirconium (Zr), tellurium (Te), thorium (Th), titanium (Ti), uranium (U), vanadium (V), yttrium (Y), ytterbium (Yb), thulium (Tm), and cobalt (Co).
