Blood-sucking leeches, some of which are referred to as medicinal leeches, have caught attention not only because of their medical purposes, but also as study organisms to conduct research within fields as diverse as neurobiology, osmoregulation, ecology, and phylogeny. Of particular interest is the question whether hemophagy in leeches is of single origin or evolved independently several times. A key component in the saliva of hematophagous leeches is hirudin, a strong natural inhibitor of thrombin and hence the blood coagulation cascade. Multiple isoforms of hirudin have been described within and among several leech species and genera, often based on sequence data only. The identification of hirudin-like factors (HLFs) illustrated the necessity to underpin such predictions by functional tests. We overexpressed and purified the hirudin of the North American medicinal leech, , and proved its thrombin-inhibiting activity. In addition, analysis of the gene structure of both hirudin and some of the decorsins of clearly indicated conserved exon and intron positions when compared to genes of hirudins and HLFs of Eurasian medicinal leeches. Our data provide evidence for the incorporation of decorsins into the hirudin superfamily and support the concept of a single origin of blood feeding in jawed leeches.

Traditional Chinese medicine has a long and illustrious history, and with the development of modern science and technology, the research and application of traditional Chinese medicines have continued to progress significantly. Many traditional Chinese medicinal herbs have undergone scientific validation, reinvigorating with new life and vitality, and contributing unique strengths to the advancement of human health. Recently, the discovery that leech total protein extracted from lyophilized powder reduces blood uric acid (UA) levels by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase to decrease UA synthesis and promotes UA excretion by regulating different UA transporters in the kidney and intestine has undoubtedly injected new vitality and hope into this field of research.

Non-healing ulcers are chronic lesions, often found on the lower extremities, persisting for over three months despite adequate care. They are associated with systemic diseases or local disorders and significantly impact the quality of life, often resisting conventional treatments, which can be costly and pose side effects. Ta'liq al-Alaq (leech therapy), a regimen in Ilaj-Bit-Tadbeer of Unani medicine, offers an alternative based on the principle of Istifrāgh (expulsion of morbid humours).

There is, at present, a lack of consensus regarding precisely what is meant by the term 'energy' across the sub-disciplines of neuroscience. Definitions range from deficits in the rate of glucose metabolism in consciousness research to regional changes in neuronal activity in cognitive neuroscience. In computational neuroscience virtually all models define the energy of neuronal regions as a quantity that is in a continual process of dissipation to its surroundings.
