We employ a variety of natural bond orbital (NBO) and natural resonance theory (NRT) tools to comprehensively investigate the nature of halogen and pnicogen bonding interactions in RPH···IF/FI binary complexes (R = CH, OH, CF, CN, and NO) and the tuning effects of R-substituents. Though such interactions are commonly attributed to "sigma-hole"-type electrostatic effects, we show that they exhibit profound similarities and analogies to the resonance-type 3-center, 4-electron (3c/4e) donor-acceptor interactions of hydrogen bonding, where classical-type "electrostatics" are known to play only a secondary modulating role. The general 3c/4e resonance perspective corresponds to a continuous range of interatomic A···B bond orders (), spanning both the stronger "covalent" interactions of the molecular domain (say, ≥ ½) and the weaker interactions ( ˂ ½, often misleadingly termed "noncovalent") that underlie supramolecular complexation phenomena. We show how a unified NBO/NRT-based description of hydrogen, halogen, pnicogen, and related bonding yields an improved predictive utility and intuitive understanding of empirical trends in binding energies, structural geometry, and other measurable properties that are expected to be manifested in all such supramolecular interaction phenomena.

Halogen, chalcogen, pnictogen, and tetrel bonds in organocatalysis have gained noticeable attention. In this work, carbon-bromide bond activation in the Ritter reaction by bidentate imidazole-type halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, and tetrel bond donors was studied by density functional theory. All of the above four kinds of catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performance.

The existence of halogen, chalcogen, pnicogen, and tetrel bonds as variants of noncovalent σ and π-hole bonds is now widely accepted, and many of their properties have been elucidated. The ability of the d-block transition metals to potentially act as Lewis acids in a similar capacity is examined systematically by DFT calculations. Metals examined span the entire range of the d-block from Group 3 to 12, and are selected from several rows of the periodic table.

σ-Hole site-based interactions in the trigonal bipyramidal geometrical structure of hypervalent pnicogen, halogen, and aerogen-bearing molecules with pyridine and NCH Lewis bases (LBs) were comparatively examined. In this respect, the ZF···, XFO···, and AeFO···LB complexes (where Z = As, Sb; X = Br, I; Ae = Kr, Xe; and LB = pyridine and NCH) were investigated. The electrostatic potential (EP) analysis affirmations outlined the occurrence of σ-holes on the systems under consideration with disparate magnitudes that increased according to the following order: AeFO < XFO < ZF.

Context: The complexes formed as a result of the interactions between cyanophosphine (CP, HPCN) and hypohalous acid molecules (HOX, X = F, Cl, Br, and I) were studied by employing ab initio computations conducted at the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ level. Three types of complexes were acquired (I, II, and III) as a result of the (O∙∙∙P) pnicogen bond, the (N∙∙∙H) hydrogen bond, and the (N∙∙∙X) halogen bond interaction, respectively. The results of harmonic vibrational frequency calculations with no imaginary frequencies confirmed the structures as minima.

Transition between the Noncovalency and Covalency of σ-Hole Bonds.

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Utah State University, Logan, Utah 84322-0300, United States.

The properties of the bond between a N-ligand and a Lewis acid containing a σ-hole are studied by quantum chemical methods. Interactions considered include pnicogen bonds involving SbX, PX, and PX, where X represents any of the halogen atoms F, Cl, Br, or I. Also studied are the tetrel bonds of PbX and SiX, as well as the chalcogen bond involving TeOX.
