Published: December 1995

Forty-one samples of beer were analyzed for fumonisins B and B (FB and FB) using an immunoaffinity column cleanup followed by liquid chromatographic (LC) analysis. These samples included three later brand resamplings. All LC analyses were carried out using -phthaldialdehyde/2-mercaptoethanol (OPA/MCE) and/or 4-fluoro-7-nitrobenzofurazan (NBD-F) derivatization procedures. Detection limits were 0.4 to 1 ng of FB or FB per ml of beer with OPA/MCE and 0.7 to 3 ng/ml with NBD-F. Recoveries of FB and FB spiked into 8 different beer samples at 2 to 10ng/ml ranged from 61 to 114% and 47 to 97%, respectively. Four samples (one of which was a resampled brand) contained >2 ng of FB per ml (up to 59 ng/ml).

Serum amyloid A (SAA) is a key biomarker for diagnosing inflammatory responses in diseases like influenza and COVID-19. An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor has been constructed for signal enhancement in SAA detection by encapsulating 4,4',4″,4‴-(1,3,6,8-pyrenetetrayl) tetrakis-benzoic acid (TBAPy) into liposomes. Such biomimetic encapsulation shields the biologically important membrane to avoid aggregation of TBAPy and prevents quenching.

Winter barley (Hordeum vulgare) production areas in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River are severely threatened by barley yellow mosaic disease, which is caused by Barley yellow mosaic virus and Barley mild mosaic virus. Improving barley disease resistance in breeding programs requires knowledge of genetic loci in germplasm resources. In this study, bulked segregant analysis (BSA) identified a novel major quantitative trait loci (QTL) QRym.

Background: Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has revolutionized the management of aortic stenosis and has become the standard of care across a broad spectrum of patients with aortic stenosis. However, it is still associated with high incidence of conduction abnormalities, particularly new left bundle branch block (LBBB). Management of these patients remains a challenge.

Starch and non-starch polysaccharides ((N)SPs) are relevant in cereal-based beverages. Although their molar mass and conformation are important to the sensory characteristics of beer and non-alcoholic beer, their triggering mechanism in the mouth is not fully understood. Soft tribology has emerged as a tool to mimic oral processing (drinking).
