We report experimental results indicating entrainment of aperiodic and periodic oscillatory dynamics in the Mercury Beating Heart (MBH) system under the influence of superimposed periodic forcing. Aperiodic oscillations in MBH were controlled to generate stable topological modes, namely, circle, ellipse, and triangle, evolving in a periodic fashion at different parameters of the forcing signal. These periodic dynamics show 1:1 entrainment for circular and elliptical modes, and additionally the controlled system exhibits 1:2 entrainment for elliptical and triangular modes at a different set of parameters. The external periodic forcing of the periodic MBH system reveals the existence of domains of entrainment (1:1, 1:2, 1:3, and 1:4) represented in the Arnold tongue structures. Moreover, Devil's staircase is obtained when the amplitude-frequency space of parameters of the applied signal is scanned.

Complexing medications with cyclodextrins can enhance their solubility and stability. In this study, we investigated the host-guest complexation between Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) and Hydroxypropyl-β-Cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP-D3/TPZ level of theory in two possible orientations. To determine the reactive sites in both complexes for electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks, we calculated and interpreted the binding energy, HOMO and LUMO orbitals, global chemical reactivity descriptors, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, and Fukui indices.

The paper analyzes current discussions concerning the so called "replicability crisis" - a notion describing difficulties in attempts to confirm existing research findings by their additional scrutiny or by new empirical studies. We propose interpretation that this "crisis" may be seen as a manifestation of the increasing inconsistency between, on the one hand, the outdated views on a human being and social structures dominating in the academic mainstream across various disciplines, including psychology and sociology, and, on the other hand, the reality of the emerging new stage of societal evolution, neo-structuration, which brings to the forefront individual agency. Our analysis suggests the possibilities for the future inter-disciplinary paradigmatic shift, which implies putting in the center of research not the idea of a constant or predictably developing individual in the context of solid external structures operating in line with a presumably sustainable "progress".

Background: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to external forces is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among people of all age groups, worldwide. Multiple biological processes like neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress, amyloid β (Aβ) production, and tau hyperphosphorylation are involved in the pathogenesis of TBI. The role of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress has been suggested in the pathophysiology of brain injury-induced cognitive dysfunction.

Knitted fabrics are metamaterials with remarkable mechanical properties, such as extreme deformability and multiple history-dependent rest shapes. This Letter shows that those properties may stem from a continuous set of metastable states for a fabric free of external forces. This is evidenced through experiments, numerical simulations, and analytical developments.

Background: Intravenous anesthesia with high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) has been reported to benefit oxygen reserves and enhance postoperative recovery in surgeries requiring low neuromuscular blockade. This study investigated whether HFNC improves recovery quality in elderly undergoing ureteroscopic holmium laser lithotripsy (UHLL).
Methods: We enrolled 106 elderly patients undergoing UHLL, with 96 patients (48 per group) included in the final analysis.
