Purpose: To investigate the anatomical and functional changes in areas containing paravascular abnormalities (PVA) in eyes with epiretinal membrane (ERM) after surgery.

Methods: Twenty-eight eyes with concurrent idiopathic ERM and PVA were enrolled in this prospective study. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central macular thickness (CMT), and areas of PVA in the superficial and deep capillary levels detected on en face optical coherence tomography were measured preoperatively and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Retinal sensitivity in selected PVA lesions was evaluated by microperimetry preoperatively and 1 and 6 months postoperatively.

Results: The areas of PVA at the superficial capillary level before and 1, 3, and 6 months after surgery measured 1.65 ± 1.27, 0.44 ± 0.62, 0.40 ± 0.64, and 0.38 ± 0.62 mm, respectively, while those at the deep capillary level measured 0.27 ± 0.57, 0.10 ± 0.26, 0.09 ± 0.29, and 0.05 ± 0.15 mm, respectively. The areas of PVA in the superficial and deep capillary levels were significantly smaller postoperatively (all p < 0.001 at the superficial capillary level and p = 0.010 at the deep capillary level). Average retinal sensitivity values in the PVA lesions before and 1 and 6 months after surgery were 11.2 ± 3.5, 12.9 ± 3.2, and 13.2 ± 2.7 dB, respectively; the values at postoperative months 1 and 6 were significantly improved (p = 0.045 and p < 0.001, respectively). BCVA and CMT were significantly improved postoperatively.

Conclusion: PVA not only improves anatomically but also functionally after ERM surgery. Vitrectomy can improve not only central vision but also retinal sensitivity in areas of PVA.

The relevance of active research lies in the need to develop new technologies to improve drug delivery methods for the effective treatment of wound healing. Additionally, the potential application of organogels in other areas of biomedicine, such as creating medical patches with controlled drug delivery, indicates a wide range of possibilities for using this technology. This study focuses on developing controlled drug delivery systems using organogels as carriers for ceftriaxone and ofloxacin.

Polymers have been integral to the advancement of biomedicine, owing to their exceptional versatility and functionality. Among these, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan both natural polymers stand out for their remarkable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and unique properties. This review article provides a comprehensive examination of the diverse applications of PVA and chitosan in three pivotal areas: tissue engineering, drug delivery, and biosensors.

Sewage systems are a major source for microplastics in riverine exports to oceans. Urban areas are generally considered hotspots for microplastic discharge, whereas emissions from rural areas remain largely understudied. Hence, this study investigated the abundance, characteristics, and polymer types of microplastics in rural wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Guiyang and estimated the annual microplastic emissions of China based on sewage discharge.

Background: The main aim of the study whether changes in central venous-to-arterial CO difference (ΔP(v-a)CO) and central venous oxygen saturation (ΔScvO) induced by volume expansion (VE) are reliable parameters to define fluid responsiveness (FR) in sedated and mechanically ventilated septic patients. We also sought to determine whether the degree of FR was related to baseline ScvO and P(v-a)CO levels.

Methods: This was a post-hoc analysis of a multicenter prospective study.

Fluorescence Enhancement of Nonemissive Monodeprotonated Luteolin in a Poly(vinyl alcohol) Film.

School of Physics and Optoelectronic Engineering, Yangtze University, Jingzhou 434023, China.

Solid polymer matrixes can modulate the electronic states of embedded chromophores and have been widely used in flexible optoelectronic and optical materials. Luteolin is one of the most common natural flavonoids, and its neutral and monodeprotonated forms are nonemissive in aqueous solution induced by ultrafast excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) followed by nonradiative relaxation. In this study, we have incorporated luteolin into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films and studied their fluorescence behaviors.
