To measure the mass of the electron neutrino, the "Electron Capture in Holmium-163" (ECHo) collaboration aims at calorimetrically measuring the spectrum following electron capture in Ho. The success of the ECHo experiment depends critically on the radiochemical purity of the Ho sample, which is ion-implanted into the calorimeters. For this, a 30 kV high transmission magnetic mass separator equipped with a resonance ionization laser ion source is used. To meet the ECHo requirements, the ion source unit was optimized with respect to its thermal characteristics and material composition by means of the finite element method thermal-electric calculations and chemical equilibrium simulation using the Gibbs energy minimization method. The new setup provides an improved selectivity of laser ionization vs interfering surface ionization of 2700(500) and an overall efficiency of 41(5)% for the ion-implantation process.

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a valuable tool that enables label-free analysis and the ability to measure multiple molecules. The atmospheric pressure MS imaging (MSI) method usually requires tedious sample preparation. A simple ionization method with minimal sample preparation is needed for high-throughput analysis.

Deoxycholic acid (DCA) injection is applied in treating moderate to severe submental bulge or facial fullness caused by excessive submental fat accumulation. Using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) technology, which was swiftly, precisely, and reliably confirmed, DCA was determined in human plasma with low quantification limits of 56 ng/mL. We selected six healthy individual blank human plasma with low concentrations of endogenous DCA and mixed them to prepare standard curve samples.

Key Laboratory of Advanced Energy Materials Chemistry (Ministry of Education), College of Chemistry, Nankai University, Tianjin, China.

Aqueous zinc-based batteries have garnered the attention of the electrochemical energy storage community, but they suffer from electrolytes freezing and sluggish kinetics in cold environments. In this Review, we discuss the key parameters necessary for designing anti-freezing aqueous zinc electrolytes. We start with the fundamentals related to different zinc salts and their dissolution and solvation behaviours, by highlighting the effects of anions and additives on salt solubility, ion diffusion and freezing points.

Reversible electrochemical extraction using cathode materials shows great potential for selective lithium extraction from low-concentration aqueous sources. However, ion selectivity and structural distortion challenges have limited its application to sources like seawater. Here, we synthesize Nb-modified LiMnO using a simple wet chemistry coating method, introducing minimal structural defects in the LiMnO materials and enhancing stability with a LiNbO coating to limit lattice expansion.
