The Incidence and Aetiology of Maxillofacial Trauma and Concomitant Traumatic Brain Injury in a Johannesburg Tertiary Hospital.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

Objective: To investigate the incidence and etiology of maxillofacial trauma (MFT) and its association with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Background: Anecdotal evidence suggests that there is an association between MFT and TBI and that higher incidences of TBI are associated with frontal bone and mid-facial fractures. Despite the large volume of maxillofacial facial fractures treated in the authors' unit, no study has been undertaken to establish the relationship between TBI and maxillofacial fractures.

Taking advantage of the good mechanical strength of expanded Drosophila brains and to tackle their relatively large size that can complicate imaging, we apply potassium (poly)acrylate-based hydrogels for expansion microscopy (ExM), resulting in a 40x plus increased resolution of transgenic fluorescent proteins preserved by glutaraldehyde fixation in the nervous system. Large-volume ExM is realized by using an axicon-based Bessel lightsheet microscope, featuring gentle multi-color fluorophore excitation and intrinsic optical sectioning capability, enabling visualization of Tm5a neurites and L3 lamina neurons with photoreceptors in the optic lobe. We also image nanometer-sized dopaminergic neurons across the same intact iteratively expanded Drosophila brain, enabling us to measure the 3D expansion ratio.

Objective: To provide a cross-sectional view of the current opinions surrounding the urology match by analyzing data from the annual Society of Academic Urologists Program Director Surveys conducted between 2022 and 2024.

Methods: Data collected through surveys distributed to all urology program directors (PD) consisting of questions covering program demographics, applicant selection criteria, preference signals (PS), virtual interviews (VI), and other relevant topics.

Results: 89, 90, and 89 PD participated in the surveys for the years 2022, 2023, and 2024, respectively.

Background & Aims: Long-term albumin (LTA) is currently standard of care for patients with decompensated cirrhosis in many Italian hepatology centres. In this real-life study, we aimed to describe patient, logistical and treatment-related characteristics in daily clinical practice and to identify predictors of response.

Methods: We performed a multicentre, retrospective, observational study in patients with cirrhosis and ascites receiving LTA between 01/2016 and 02/2022 and followed until death, TIPS (transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt) placement, transplantation or 02/2023.

Article Synopsis
  • Training a statistical model for classification in machine learning is easy with enough precise data, but fuzzy categories can reveal insights about the underlying issues in the classification process.
  • The study classifies academic publications using only their abstracts, identifying misclassifications by comparing machine learning-generated categories to journal categories, which creates a network that illustrates relationships among disciplines.
  • Analysis of this misclassification network shows how disciplines interact and suggests that misclassified articles are linked to increased interdisciplinarity, leading to higher citation rates in top journals but lower rates in others.
