The use of matrix-matched standards with a solid-liquid extraction and salting out without the addition of further cleanup steps or costly cleanup procedures associated with the quick, easy, cheap, effective, robust, and safe (QuEChERS) method was evaluated to address variations in ionization efficiency in the LC-MS/MS determination of neonicotinoid pesticides in complex environmental samples. Limits of detection (1.4-3.4 ng/g) and limits of quantitation (4.6-11.3 ng/g) for various neonicotinoid analogs were comparable to previously reported QuEChERS extraction methods. Mean recovery of standard neonicotinoid samples spiked with 10 ng/g was found to be 78.0-100.5%, while samples spiked with 100 ng/g were found to be 55.1-99.9%. Recovery of analytes was matrix dependent; the highest recovery was from sediment (86.2-100.5%) followed by laboratory sand (70.9-81.7%) and agricultural soil (55.5-102.6%), respectively. Optimization of this methodology resulted in the reduction of procedure time and cost, and can aid in environmental monitoring efforts of common neonicotinoid pesticides in soils and sediments.

Currently, treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) is still the first choice for epileptic patients, while monitoring their blood concentrations is undoubtedly beneficial for minimizing their adverse side effects and optimizing their therapeutic effects. In this study, an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry with polarity switching was developed and validated for simultaneous determination of 14 AEDs and 2 active metabolites in human serum. Foods may become contaminated with environmental PAHs found in air, soil, or water, or through industrial food processing methods such as smoking, roasting, drying, and grilling. The Ministry of Health and Welfare in Taiwan has established maximum levels for benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) and indicative values for BaP as well as PAH4 (the sum of benz[a]anthracene, chrysene, benzo[b]fluoranthene, and benzo[a]pyrene) in foods as operational guidelines.

Recently, an instrumental analysis using LC-MS/MS has been developed and validated for paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) and tetrodotoxin (TTX) in bivalve molluscs in Japanese domestic and overseas. The method for 11 PSTs and TTX in scallops was validated in accordance with a previous report and CODEX-STAN. The samples were prepared by adding the standard mixture of PSTs and TTX to scallop (Patinopecten yessoensis) homogenates, extracted with 1% acetic acid and then cleaned up using an ENVI-Carb (250 mg/3 mL) cartridge.

Accurate determination of rare earth element (REE) concentrations in CaF crystals using UV-LA-ICP-MS is important but challenging due to the lack of matrix-matched reference materials. In this study, a REE-doped CaF single crystal (CaF-05), prepared via the Bridgman-Stockbarger technique, was systematically characterized to assess its optical properties, homogeneity, and stability. Analyses using portable laser irradiation, UV-vis spectroscopy, back scatter electron (BSE) imaging, and cathodoluminescence (CL) demonstrated that the crystal possesses high optical quality and exhibits distinct optical adsorption properties compared to the silicate reference material NIST SRM 610.
