We used stable isotopes of carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen to quantify the trophic position and resource use of larval sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus, four benthic macroinvertebrate functional feeding guilds (scraper, shredder, collector and predator) and other fishes in three rivers in eastern Canada. Larval lamprey and most invertebrate guilds foraged as primary consumers in all rivers whereas all other fishes predominantly foraged as secondary consumers. Larval lamprey obtained 75-85% of their resources from allochthonous derived material. This level exceeded all invertebrate guilds, which assimilated approximately 50% allochthonous and 50% autochthonous materials and fishes, which predominantly assimilated between 25% and 60% allochthonous material. Larval lamprey occupied a unique position within the river food webs analysed and show remarkable fidelity to a trophic niche specialising on terrestrially derived detritus.

Although the liver of the lamprey, a group of cyclostomes that diverged the earliest among vertebrates, has abundant bile ducts in the larval stage, which degenerate during metamorphosis, there is no comparative study on its architecture with other early diverged vertebrates in terms of the morphological evolution of vertebrate livers. The present study was undertaken to compare the characteristics of the brook lamprey liver with those of the hagfish and banded houndshark, which have the portal triad type liver architecture, and to discuss its evolution. Although the liver of the brook lamprey had two-cell cords of hepatocytes lined by sinusoids in the ammocoetes larval stage, intrahepatic bile ducts around portal veins penetrated into the liver parenchyma with convolution and gradual reduction in diameter.

The release of sterilized insects to control pest populations has been used successfully during the past 6 decades, but application of the method in vertebrates has largely been overlooked or met with failure. Here, we demonstrate for the first time in fish, that a small population of sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus; Class Agnatha), arguably one of the most impactful invasive fish in the world, can be controlled by the release of sterilized males. Specifically, the release of high numbers of sterile males (~ 1000's) into a geographically isolated population of adult sea lamprey resulted in the first multiyear delay in pesticide treatment since treatments began during 1966.

Solute carrier family 26 (Slc26) is a family of anion exchangers with 11 members in mammals (named Slc26a1-a11). Here, we identified a novel member of the slc26 family, slc26a12, located in tandem with slc26a2 in the genomes of several vertebrate lineages. BLAST and synteny analyses of various jawed vertebrate genome databases revealed that slc26a12 is present in coelacanths, amphibians, reptiles, and birds but not in cartilaginous fishes, lungfish, mammals, or ray-finned fishes.

The risk of lampricide applications (such as 4-nitro-3-[trifluoromethyl]phenol [TFM]) to nontarget fauna continues to be a concern within the Great Lakes Fishery Commission Sea Lamprey Control Program, especially among imperiled aquatic species-such as native freshwater mussels. The Grand River (Ohio, USA) is routinely treated for larval sea lampreys (Petromyzon marinus), and this river contains populations of the federally threatened mussel Obovaria subrotunda. Given this spatial overlap, information on the sensitivity of O.

RGM interactions with its receptor Neogenin play an important role in the regulation of axonal guidance or cell death in the developing central nervous system. The sea lamprey transcript has been recently identified. However, its expression has been only studied in the spinal cord of mature (premetamorphic) larval sea lampreys.
