Rethinking Optimal Immunogens to Face SARS-CoV-2 Evolution Through Vaccination.

Influenza Other Respir Viruses

January 2025

Área de Investigación en Vacunas, Fundación para el Fomento de la Investigación Sanitaria y Biomédica de la Comunitat Valenciana, Valencia, Spain.

SARS-CoV-2, which originated in China in late 2019, quickly fueled the global COVID-19 pandemic, profoundly impacting health and the economy worldwide. A series of vaccines, mostly based on the full SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein, were rapidly developed, showing excellent humoral and cellular responses and high efficacy against both symptomatic infection and severe disease. However, viral evolution and the waning humoral neutralizing responses strongly challenged vaccine long term effectiveness, mainly against symptomatic infection, making necessary a strategy of repeated and updated booster shots.

Rethinking retinoic acid self-regulation: A signaling robustness network approach.

Curr Top Dev Biol

January 2025

Daniel Baugh Institute for Functional Genomics and Computational Biology, Department of Pathology and Genomic Medicine, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, United States. Electronic address:

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) signaling is a major pathway regulating numerous differentiation, proliferation, and patterning processes throughout life. ATRA biosynthesis depends on the nutritional availability of vitamin A and other retinoids and carotenoids, while it is sensitive to dietary and environmental toxicants. This nutritional and environmental influence requires a robustness response that constantly fine-tunes the ATRA metabolism to maintain a context-specific, physiological range of signaling levels.

Background And Purpose: Approximately, 30% to 60% of older adults experience functional decline following hospitalization, which has implications for their ability to meet social needs after discharge. Exploring the unmet social needs of older adults following discharge is warranted to rethink the elements of hospital discharge in low-resource countries. This study explored the unmet social needs of older adults with mobility limitations following discharge from an inpatient rehabilitation unit in a state hospital in Northern Nigeria.

Background: The transition of the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 1 to a pass/fail scoring system is reshaping its role in medical students' residency placements. This compels institutions to rethink Step 2 preparation strategies, raising concerns about a clerkship's impact on various student groups. Traditionally, medical schools followed the traditional block rotation model for clerkships, which limits longitudinal learning, and many schools are switching to longitudinal integrated clerkships and longitudinal interleaved clerkships (LInCs).

Rethinking the biochar impact on the anaerobic digestion of food waste in bench-scale digester: Spatial distribution and biogas production.

Bioresour Technol

January 2025

Advanced Environmental Biotechnology Centre, Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University, 1 Cleantech Loop, Singapore, 637141, Singapore.

The improvement of biogas production in anaerobic digestion (AD) by biochar introduction has been demonstrated. However, the distribution of biochar in the digester and its effect on AD have been seldom explored. In this study, the distribution of biochar and their impact on AD were investigated in a 30 L semi-continuously operated bench-scale anaerobic digester.
