A new Helmholtz free energy density functional is presented to predict the vapor-liquid interface of chainlike molecules. The functional is based on the last version of the statistical associating fluid theory for potentials of variable range for homogeneous Mie chainlike fluids (SAFT-VR Mie). Following the standard formalism, the density functional theory (SAFT-VR Mie DFT) is constructed using a perturbative approach in which the free energy density contains a reference term to describe all the short-range interactions treated at the local level, and a perturbative contribution to account for the attractive perturbation which incorporates the long-range dispersive interactions. In this first work, we use a mean-field version of the theory in which the pair correlations are neglected in the attractive term. The SAFT-VR Mie DFT formalism is used to examine the effect of molecular chain length and the repulsive exponent of the intermolecular potential on density profiles and surface tension of linear chains made up of up to six Mie (λr - 6) segments with different values of the repulsive exponent of the intermolecular potential. Theoretical predictions from the theory are compared directly with molecular simulation data for density profiles and surface tension of Mie chainlike molecules taken from the literature. Agreement between theory and simulation data is good for short-chain molecules under all thermodynamic conditions of coexistence considered. Once the theory has proven that it is able to predict the interfacial properties, and particularly interfacial tension, the SAFT-VR Mie DFT formalism is used to predict the interfacial behavior of two new coarse-grained models for carbon dioxide and water recently proposed in the literature. In particular, the theoretical formalism, in combination with the coarse-grained models for carbon dioxide and water, is able to predict the interfacial properties of these important substances in a reasonable way.

A free-energy functional is presented to explicitly take into account pair correlations between molecules in inhomogeneous fluids. The framework of classical density functional theory (DFT) is used to describe the variation in the density of molecules interacting through a Mie (generalized Lennard-Jones) potential. Grand Canonical Monte Carlo simulations are performed for the systems to validate the new functional.

The ability to predict transport properties of fluids, such as the self-diffusion coefficient and viscosity, has been an ongoing effort in the field of molecular modeling. While there are theoretical approaches to predict the transport properties of simple systems, they are typically applied in the dilute gas regime and are not directly applicable to more complex systems. Other attempts to predict transport properties are performed by fitting available experimental or molecular simulation data to empirical or semi-empirical correlations.

An extension of the SAFT-VR Mie equation of state is proposed to predict the properties of multipolar fluids. The new model, referred to as multipolar M-SAFT-VR Mie, incorporates the general multipolar term developed by Gubbins and co-workers, which accounts for dipole-dipole, quadrupole-quadrupole, and dipole-quadrupole interactions. A modification of the third order terms in the perturbation theory results in an accurate description of the simulation data for multipolar Lennard-Jones fluids.

An empirical multi-parameter equation of state in terms of the reduced Helmholtz energy is presented for the Mie (λ-6) fluid with a repulsive exponent λ from 11 to 13. The equation is fitted to an extensive dataset from molecular dynamics simulation as well as the second and third thermal virial coefficients. It is comprehensively compared with the SAFT-VR model and is a more accurate description of the considered fluid class.

Predicting the absorption of gases and liquids in semicrystalline polymers is of critical importance for numerous applications; the mechanical and transport properties of these materials are highly dependent on the amount of solutes dissolved in their bulk. For most semicrystalline polymers which are in contact with an external fluid, the observed uptake of the solute is found to be lower than that predicted by treating the amorphous domains of the polymer as subcooled polymer melts at the same thermodynamic state. This observation has recently led to the hypothesis that the amorphous domains effectively behave as polymer liquids subject to an additional "constraint pressure" which reduces the equilibrium solubility in the domains.
