In this study, we hypothesized that maternal anemia leads to altered expression of angiogenic proteins vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), placental growth factor (PLGF), nitrotyrosine (NT) residues, and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (e-NOS) in the placenta. Hence, we study the expression of the abovementioned proteins in the placentas of mothers with different grades of anemia. Our study was conducted in 48 pregnant women (36-40 weeks of gestation), who were divided into four groups-normal, mild, moderate, and severe anemia. After delivery, the expression of the angiogenic proteins was studied in their placentas by immunohistochemistry. In our study, 58.3% of the pregnant women were anemic, among which 20.83% had mild anemia, 18.75% had moderate anemia, and 18.75% had severe anemia. Immunohistochemical staining intensity for VEGF, PLGF, NT residues, and e-NOS proteins was observed to be higher in the placentas of anemic women when compared with the non-anemic women. Our study showed that there is an increased expression of angiogenic proteins in the placentas of anemic mothers, which probably is an adaptive response leading to changes in placental vessels.

High expression of drug efflux pump makes antibiotics ineffective against bacteria, leading to drug-resistant strains and even the emergence of "superbugs". Herein, we design and synthesize a dual functional o-nitrobenzene (NB)-modified conjugated oligo-polyfluorene vinylene (OPFV) photosensitizer, OPFV-NB, which can depress efflux pump activity and also possesses photodynamic therapy (PDT) for synergistically overcoming drug-resistant bacteria. Upon light irradiation, the OPFV-NB can produce aldehyde active groups to covalently bind outer membrane proteins, such as tolerant colicin (TolC), blocking drug efflux of bacteria.

Objective: Gliomas are a general designation for neuroepithelial tumors derived from the glial cells of the central nervous system. According to the histopathological and immunohistochemical features, the World Health Organization classifies gliomas into four grades. Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody targeting vascular endothelial growth factor that has been approved for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) as a second-line therapy.

Testing for developmental toxicity is an integral part of chemical regulations. The applied tests are laborious and costly and require a large number of vertebrate test animals. To reduce animal numbers and associated costs, the zebrafish embryo was proposed as an alternative model.

Erythrodermic psoriasis (EP) is a life-threatening variant of psoriasis. In this study, we contrasted the vascular endothelial cells (ECs) in EP lesions against those in psoriasis vulgaris and healthy controls. Utilizing single-cell RNA sequencing, immunofluorescence, and flow cytometry on human and mouse samples, we observed a marked increase and activation of EP ECs, which upregulated genes relative to angiogenesis, leukocyte adhesion and antigen presentation.

Background: The identification of novel blood-based biomarkers of small vessel disease of the brain (SVD) may improve pathophysiologic understanding and inform the development of new therapeutic strategies for prevention. We evaluated plasma proteomic associations of white matter fractional anisotropy (WMFA), white matter hyperintensity (WMH) volume, enlarged perivascular space (ePVS) volume, and the presence of microbleeds (MB) on brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the population-based Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).
Methods: Eligible MESA participants had 2941 plasma proteins measured from stored blood samples (collected in 2016-2018) using the antibody-based Olink proteomics platform, and completed brain MRI scans in 2018-2019.
