The evaluation of the toxicological effects of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiONPs) is increasingly important due to their growing occupational and industrial use. Curcumin is a yellow curry spice with a long history of use in herbal medicine and has numerous protective potentials such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects. Accordingly, we tested the hypothesis that curcumin could ameliorate TiONP-induced cardiotoxic and genotoxic effects in adult male albino rats. For this purpose, 48 adult male albino rats were randomized into five groups; all treatment was by oral gavage once daily for 90 days: group I (8 rats), untreated control; group II (16 rats), subdivided into vehicle control IIa (8 rats) received saline and vehicle control IIb (8 rats) received corn oil; group III (8 rats) orally gavaged with curcumin dissolved in 0.5 ml corn oil at a dose of 200 mg/kg b.w./day; group IV treated with TiONPs at a dose of 1200 mg/kg b.w./day (1/10 LD) suspended in 1 ml of 0.9% saline; group V treated with curcumin + TiONPs (the same previously mentioned doses). Curcumin was orally gavaged for 7 days before TiONPs treatment was initiated, and then they received TiONPs along with curcumin at the same doses for 90 days. TiONPs administration resulted in several myocardial cytomorphic changes as structurally disorganized, degenerated, and apoptotic cardiomyocytes and the newly implemented 3-nitrotyrosine immune expression rendered strong evidence that these effects derived from the cardio myocellular oxidative burden. Furthermore, comet assay results confirmed TiONP-related DNA damage. Remarkably, all these changes are partially mitigated in rats treated with both curcumin and TiONPs. Our results suggest that concurrent curcumin treatment has a beneficial role in ameliorating TiONP-induced cardiotoxicity and this may be mediated by its antioxidative property.

Background: Recent studies have shown that ferroptosis, a newly identified regulated cell death characterized by increased lipid peroxidation and accumulation of toxic lipid peroxides, is closely related to the pathophysiological processes of nervous system diseases which can be inhibited with iron chelators, lipophilic antioxidants, and lipid peroxidation inhibitors.
Objective: To review the current evidence on the efficacy of various natural polyphenols in nervous system injury.
Methods: The data selected for this review were collected by searching the MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar database for articles published in English between 2000 and 2024 using the following terms: cell death, regulated cell death, ferroptosis, lipid peroxides, iron, and glutathione peroxidase.

Chemoprevention is one of the accessible strategies for preventing, delaying or reversing cancer processing utilizing chemical intervention of carcinogenesis. NAD(P)H quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) is a xenobiotic metabolizing cytosolic enzyme/protein with important functional properties towards oxidation stress, supporting its ability in detoxification/chemoprotective role. A set of 3,5-diylidene-4-piperidones (as curcumin mimics) bearing alkyl sulfonyl group were synthesized with potential NQO1 induction properties.

Bacterial infections impede skin wound healing, and antibacterial hydrogels have garnered significant attention in the field of wound care due to their combined therapeutic effects. In this study, an intelligent, responsive AC-Gel@Cur-Au hydrogel was developed using temperature-sensitive agarose and pH-responsive chitosan as the structural framework, infused with Gel@Cur and AuNR. The AC-Gel@Cur-Au hydrogels demonstrated excellent mechanical properties, swelling capacity, tissue adhesion, and biodegradability.

Objectives: Exposure of gingival epithelial cells to butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid produced by dental plaque bacteria, cause cell death and subsequent damage-associated molecular pattern (DAMP) release. We investigated the effects of curcumin, a polyphenol extracted from turmeric, on butyrate-induced human gingival epithelial Ca9-22 cell death and DAMP release.
Methods: Ca9-22 cells were pretreated with curcumin before butyrate exposure.

Purpose Of Review: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can cause significant psychological, physical, and economic burdens on patients and healthcare systems. Studies show over one-fifth of patients will seek nontraditional methods of treatment for managing their symptoms. Understanding the benefits - and potential harms - of these therapies is important to provide holistic and evidence-based care to our IBD patients.
