Recently, it has been great efforts to synthesize an efficient water-oxidizing catalyst. However, to find the true catalyst in the harsh conditions of the water-oxidation reaction is an open area in science. Herein, we showed that corrosion of some simple manganese salts, MnCO, MnWO, Mn(PO) · 3HO, and Mn(VO) · xHO, under the water-electrolysis conditions at pH = 6.3, gives an amorphous manganese oxide. This conversion was studied with X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), as well as, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), spectroelectrochemistry and electrochemistry methods. When using as a water-oxidizing catalyst, such results are important to display that long-term water oxidation can change the nature of the manganese salts.

In this study, a tetradentate Schiff-base ligand (HL), synthesized by the condensation of ethylenediamine with 2-hydroxy-3-methoxy-5-methylbenzaldehyde, was reacted with either manganese salts or manganese salts in the presence of various pseudohalides in methanol. This reaction resulted in the formation of five mononuclear Mn complexes: [Mn(L)(HO)](NO)·1/2HO·1/2CHOH (), [Mn(L)(HO)](ClO)·HO (), [Mn(L)(N)(HO)]·1/3HO (), [Mn(L)(NCS)(HO)] (), and [Mn(L)(HO)](dca) () (where dca is dicyanamide ion). X-ray crystallography revealed that the Mn centers adopt a hexa-coordinate pseudo-octahedral geometry, where the equatorial plane is constructed with phenoxo oxygen and imine nitrogen atoms from the Schiff base ligand, while the axial positions are occupied by water molecules or a combination of water and pseudohalides.

The article reports a hitherto-unknown aromatic proton transfer (APT) to the o-amine function chelated to manganese(II) ion and disintegration of the molecule generating an aryne intermediate. The reaction of (NQ)-NH(AQ) (LH) with manganese(II) acetate in boiling DMF generates [Mn(L)], where the LH ligands undergo disintegration forming manganese(II) complexes of AQ and an 1,4-naphthoquinonyne intermediate based on benzoquinone ring, that has been defined as [NQ-2H] (NQ and AQ abbreviate respectively 1,4-naphthoquinone and 8-aminoquinoline fragments). The fragmentation reaction of LH depends on the metal precursor used, solvent and temperature.

Understanding the environmental behavior of thallium (Tl) is crucial due to its high toxicity and increasing anthropogenic presence. This study investigated the adsorption and redox behaviors of Tl(I) with acid birnessite (AcBi) in the presence of 1,4-piperazine-diethanesulfonic acid (PIPES) and goethite under diffusion-limited conditions using Donnan reactors in aerobic and anaerobic environments. Our findings indicate that Tl(I) preferentially adsorbs onto AcBi, with capacities 20 to 100 times higher than onto goethite, even when AcBi is partial reduced by PIPES.

Article Synopsis
  • The demetallation and remetallation of sulfanyl magnesium(II) porphyrazine with manganese(II) salts produce a novel manganese(III) derivative (Pz3), which was characterized using various spectroscopy techniques.
  • Electrochemical testing showed that Pz3 has notable activity, especially when combined with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), leading to improved detection of hydrogen peroxide (HO) compared to other electrode configurations.
  • A biosensing platform for glucose detection was developed by integrating a glucose oxidase enzyme with the modified electrode, resulting in effective glucose readings in a linear range from 0.2 to 3.7 mM.
