Soil magnetic records in Quaternary red earth (QRE) deposits contain a valuable record of paleoclimate information, providing insights into controls on Earth's climate system in the past and potentially helping to predict its response to perturbations in the future. Here, analysis of the environmental magnetism and mineralogy of the Xuancheng QRE (Anhui Province, South China) shows that magnetic variation was strongly linked to production of authigenic ferrimagnetic minerals such as maghemite. Fine-grained maghemite formed during the weathering-related transformation of iron-bearing illite to vermiculite, generating aggregates of vermiculite or mixed-layer illite-vermiculite.

Rural-urban transformation shapes oasis agriculture in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains.

Organic Plant Production and Agroecosystems Research in the Tropics and Subtropics (OPATS), University of Kassel, Steinstrasse 19, 37213, Witzenhausen, Germany.

Traditional agricultural activities and rural livelihoods in Morocco's High Atlas Mountains are rapidly changing. This is triggered by increasing rural-urban interactions and new livelihood opportunities in cities. A typical example is the oasis of Tizi N'Oucheg in the country's High Atlas Mountains, which over centuries was largely self-sufficient in food grain and livestock production.

A novel pH-responsive full-bio-based surfactant (Ca-S) containing a dynamic covalent bond is synthesized using renewable cashew phenol, 5-chloro-2-furanaldehyde, and taurine. The structure of Ca-S is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. Limonene containing oil-in-water (O/W) microemulsions are prepared on the basis of the Ca-S surfactant and are applied to the remediation of oil-contaminated soil under low-energy conditions at ambient temperature.

Early and portable detection of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for ensuring food safety, monitoring product quality, and tracing the sources of bacterial infections. Moving beyond traditional plate-culture counting methods, the analysis of active bacterial components offers a rapid means of quantifying bacteria. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDHs), synthesized via the Kirkendall effect, were employed as highly effective oxidase mimics to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is a frequently metastatic tumor of the thyroid that develops from the malignant transformation of C-cells. These tumors most commonly have activating mutations within the RET or RAS proto-oncogenes. Germline mutations within RET result in C-cell hyperplasia, and cause the MTC pre-disposition disorder, multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 2A (MEN2A).
