We present geodesic Lagrangian Monte Carlo, an extension of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo for sampling from posterior distributions defined on general Riemannian manifolds. We apply this new algorithm to Bayesian inference on symmetric or Hermitian positive definite matrices. To do so, we exploit the Riemannian structure induced by Cartan's canonical metric. The geodesics that correspond to this metric are available in closed-form and-within the context of Lagrangian Monte Carlo-provide a principled way to travel around the space of positive definite matrices. Our method improves Bayesian inference on such matrices by allowing for a broad range of priors, so we are not limited to conjugate priors only. In the context of spectral density estimation, we use the (non-conjugate) complex reference prior as an example modeling option made available by the algorithm. Results based on simulated and real-world multivariate time series are presented in this context, and future directions are outlined.

Infectious microbes can spread rapidly from fomites (contaminated surfaces) via hand touch, with prolonged residence time on surfaces increasing transmission risk by extending exposure periods and/or involving more susceptible individuals. Existing studies have focused on decreasing microbial contamination, but not on the need for rapid removal from surface systems. This study introduces residence time as the time that a microbe spends within the surface system.

As a key component of the distribution system, metering and pressure-regulating (M&R) stations provide an opportunity for effective mitigation of methane emissions. Given that these stations are readily accessible, above-ground facilities, routine methane emission monitoring can identify issues and with repair or upgrades this can lead to reduced methane emissions. This practice has become an important measure for addressing climate change.

The atom-centered density matrix propagation (ADMP) method is an extended Lagrangian approach to ab initio molecular dynamics, which includes the density matrix in an orthonormalized atom-centered Gaussian basis as additional, fictitious, electronic degrees of freedom, classically propagated along with the nuclear ones. A high adiabaticity between the nuclear and electronic subsystems is mandatory in order to keep the trajectory close to the Born-Oppenheimer (BO) surface. In this regard, the fictitious electronic mass , being a symmetric, nondiagonal matrix in its most general form, represents a free parameter, exploitable to optimize the propagation of the electronic density.

The Luttinger model is a paradigm for the breakdown due to interactions of the Fermi liquid description of one-dimensional massless Dirac fermions. Attempts to discretize the model on a one-dimensional lattice have failed to reproduce the established bosonization results because of the fermion-doubling obstruction: a local and symmetry-preserving discretization of the Hamiltonian introduces a spurious second species of low-energy excitations, while a nonlocal discretization opens a single-particle gap at the Dirac point. Here, we show how to work around this obstruction by discretizing both space and time to obtain a local Lagrangian for a helical Luttinger liquid with Hubbard interaction.

Microbial transport in fractured carbonate rock using enhanced solutions is a significant and neglected research topic in the literature. We propose an extended colloid filtration theory (CFT) combined with a particle-tracking following streamlines (PTFS) model for the rapid prediction of breakthrough curves (BTCs) and plumes of pathogens in three-dimensional (3-D) discrete fracture networks (DFNs). We adapted CFT in porous media to pathogen transport in fractures containing Terra Rossa (soil) deposits.
