Fungal growth is common in intraoperative cultures of patients with perforated peptic ulcer (PPU) leading to the common use of empiric antifungal therapy, with current evidence not clearly supporting this practice. The goal of this updated systematic review and meta-analysis was to synthesize the effect of empiric antifungals in patients with PPU. Eligible studies were identified through a comprehensive literature search in the MEDLINE (PubMed) and EMBASE databases, following the PRISMA 2020 statement.

Major vessel invasion, particularly involving the portal and superior mesenteric veins, poses significant challenges during the radical resection of hepatobiliary and pancreatic cancers. Oncovascular surgery is essential for curative outcomes, and often requires portomesenteric vein reconstruction. Techniques, such as lateral venorrhaphy, patch repair, end-to-end anastomosis, and interposition grafting, have been employed.

A "Janus" Zwitterionic Hydrogel Patch for Tissue Repair and Prevention of Post-Operative Adhesions.

Adv Healthc Mater

January 2025

Cancer Center, Gamma Knife Treatment Center, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, Affiliated People's Hospital, Hangzhou Medical College, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310014, P. R. China.

Anti-peritoneal adhesions (PA) are very important after abdominal surgery for that PA often leads to other medical problems and imposes a huge financial burden on the national healthcare system. In this work, a "Janus" zwitterionic hydrogel patch where one side can adhere firmly to the tissue, while the other side has anti-fouling properties and has little interaction with the surrounding tissue has been developed. The "Janus" hydrogel patch is prepared by in situ formation of a bonding polymer layer poly(acrylic-co-N-hydroxysuccinimide acrylate) on one side of zwitterionic hydrogel.
