To investigate the effects of Blume (GEB) and 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (HBA) on brain damage, GEB or HBA was administered orally for 14 days before middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). After 24 h reperfusion, the proportion of circling was significantly reduced in the GEB (79%) or HBA (69%) group compared to the MCAO group (100%) in the corner test, and the removal time in the adhesive removal test was significantly decreased in the GEB (117 ± 21.0 s) and HBA (101 ± 20.9 s) groups compared to the MCAO group (161 ± 12.6 s). GEB treatment significantly reduced infarct volume compared to the MCAO group. In the GEB and HBA group, necrosis of nerve cells in hippocampus and cortex, expressions of TNF-α and TUNEL positive cells were significantly reduced compared to the MCAO group. These results suggest that GEB and HBA prevents brain damage by anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects.

The role of chromatin biology and epigenetics in disease progression is gaining increasing recognition. Genes that escape X chromosome inactivation (XCI) can impact neuroinflammation through epigenetic mechanisms. Our previous study has suggested that the X escapee genes Kdm6a and Kdm5c are involved in microglial activation after stroke in aged mice.

Muscle atrophy in pathological or diseased muscles arises from an imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation. Elevated levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) are a hallmark of ischemic stroke and have been associated with muscle atrophy in certain pathological contexts. However, the mechanisms by which IL-6 induces muscle atrophy in the context of stroke remain unclear.

Background: In neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease and stroke, the brain transitions to pro-inflammatory profile, where microglia and T-cells in the brain have increase inflammatory profiles, along with increased Kv1.3 potassium channel abundance. Pharmacological blockade of Kv1.

Background: Our studies show that the small non-coding RNA, mir20a-3p, is neuroprotective for stroke in the acute phase and also attenuates long term cognitive decline in middle-aged female rats. Cognitive decline due to vascular diseases, such as stroke, is associated with secondary neurodegeneration in cortex and limbic structures. In this study, we assessed the volume of white matter, ventricles and regional diffusion-weighted MR imaging measures to delineate pathological tissue characteristics from the postmortem brain of stroke rats.

This study aims to investigate the variations in guanidino (Guan), amine and amide chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) contrasts in ischemic stroke using permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) and transient MCAO (tMCAO) models at high (9.4T) and clinical (3T) MRI fields. CEST contrasts were extracted using the Polynomial and Lorentzian Line-shape Fitting (PLOF) method.
