Ginseng root has been used in traditional oriental medicine for the enhancement of immune system function. The immunostimulatory effects of ginseng berry polysaccharides, however, remain unclear. Effects of polysaccharides from ginseng berry on the activation of natural killer (NK) cells and inhibition of tumors are reported. A crude polysaccharide was isolated from ginseng berry as a ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP) and was further fractionated using gel filtration chromatography to obtain the three polysaccharide fractions GBPP-I, -II and -III. GBPP-I consisted of mainly galactose (46.9%) and arabinose (27.5%). GBPP-I showed a high dose-dependent anticomplementary activity. Stimulation of murine peritoneal macrophages by GBPP-I showed the greatest enhancement of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-12 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- production. In addition, an assay of natural killer (NK) cell activity showed that oral ( administration of GBPP-I significantly increased NK cell cytotoxicity in YAC-1 tumor cells and production of granzyme B. Prophylactic intravenous ( and administration of GBPP-I significantly and dose-dependently inhibited lung metastatic activity in B16BL6 melanoma cells. Depletion of NK cells after injection of rabbit anti-asialo GM1 partially abolished the inhibitory effect of GBPP-I on lung metastasis, indicating that NK cells play an important role in anticancer effects. GBPP-I exerts a strong immune-enhancing activity and can prevent cancer metastasis through activation of NK cells and other immune-related cells.

DNA methylation plays a crucial role in regulating fruit ripening and seed development. It remains unknown about the dynamic characteristics of DNA methylation and its regulation mechanisms in morpho-physiological dormancy (MPD)-typed seeds with recalcitrant characteristics. The Panax notoginseng seeds are defined by the MPD and are characterized by a strong sensitivity to dehydration during the after-ripening process.

The effects of puffing on the ginsenoside composition as well as antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of ginseng berry were investigated to increase the utilization of ginseng berry. There was no significant difference in extraction yield between the control and puffed samples at all moisture contents and pressure conditions ( < 0.05).

To explore the difference in metabolism and transcription between seeds experiencing space flight and ground seeds after morphological post ripening, this study utilized ginseng seeds experiencing space flight and ground seeds as materials. Metabolomics and transcriptomics analyses were conducted using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry(UPLC-MS) and high-throughput transcriptome sequencing(RNA-seq) technologies, so as to identify differential terpenoid metabolites, differential endogenous hormones, and differentially expressed genes. The results showed that through metabolomics analysis, a total of 22 differential terpenoid metabolites were identified in the experimental and control groups, including chikusetsusaponin FK_7, ginsenoside F_2, ginseno-side K, majoroside R_1, ginsenoside Re_5, 12-hydroxyabietic acid, etc; through transcriptomics analysis, 15 differential terpenoid metabolism-related differentially expressed genes were identified in the experimental and control groups, including FCase, AACT, PMK, etc, and these genes were integrated into the pathway based on the MEP and MVA.

Intercropping is a traditional and widely used planting pattern, and different intercropped plants have differences in spatial distribution and morphological structure compared with monoculture. Therefore, intercropping can realize efficient acquisition of limited space resources and efficient conversion of existing resources by utilizing the principle of niche complementarity of composite groups, weakening interspecific or intra-specific competition, and enhancing their complementary growth. Intercropping of Chinese medicinal material(CMM) has experienced the evolution of more than two thousand years from its founding to inheritance and development.

Pollen-food allergy syndrome is an IgE-mediated allergic reaction arising from cross-reactive homologous allergens found in both food and pollen. Allergens, such as pathogenesis-related protein class 10 and profilin, usually trigger oropharyngeal itching and numbness in patients, whereas lipid transfer proteins tend to induce anaphylaxis. This article presents a case study of an individual with Artemisia pollen allergy who experienced anaphylaxis after consuming red fruit ginseng, a perennial herb belonging to the Campanulaceae family.
