The goal of this work was to investigate body weight distribution during relaxed and quiet (constrained) standing tasks. Forty-one healthy, young adults performed relaxed and quiet standing tasks, and they stood with each leg on a separate force plate. The weight distribution asymmetry across time was computed as the difference between the right and left vertical force time series. The subjects presented a small average across time asymmetry during relaxed and quiet standing. However, during relaxed standing, the subjects alternated between postures, and, as a result, they were largely asymmetrical over time (instant by instant). Two unexpected results that the authors found for the relaxed standing task were that women were more asymmetrical over time than men and that there were two preferential modes of weight distribution.

Motivation: Inferring gene networks provides insights into biological pathways and functional relationships among genes. When gene expression samples exhibit heterogeneity, they may originate from unknown subtypes, prompting the utilization of mixture Gaussian graphical model for simultaneous subclassification and gene network inference. However, this method overlooks the heterogeneity of network relationships across subtypes and does not sufficiently emphasize shared relationships.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Esomeprazole in septic lung injury by mediating endoplasmic reticulum stress.

J Bioenerg Biomembr

March 2025

Emergency Medicine Department, The people's hospital of Feicheng, No. 108 Xincheng Road, Feicheng City, Shandong Province, China.

Acute lung injury characterized by overactive pulmonary inflammation is a common and serious complication of sepsis. Esomeprazole (ESO), a potent proton pump inhibitor (PPI), has been demonstrated as a promising anti-inflammatory agent in treating sepsis at high concentrations, the efficacy of which in sepsis-induced lung injury has not been explored. This research aimed to investigate the role of ESO in septic lung injury and the potential mechanism.

In shallow water environments, choosing an appropriate reference phase velocity for direction-of-arrival estimation with a beamformed underwater horizontal line array is very important. The direction of the maximum beamformer output power will deviate from the true source bearing when a mismatched reference phase velocity was used. This Letter analyzed the intrinsic relationship between the reference phase velocity and normal mode amplitude distribution, source bearing, array aperture, and then proposed a multi-parameter weighted reference phase velocity selection method, which has improved the accuracy of source bearing estimation.

Tetrahedrite Nanocomposites for High Performance Thermoelectrics.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

February 2025

Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares (C2TN), Departamento de Engenharia e Ciências Nucleares (DECN), Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, Campus Tecnológico e Nuclear, 2695-066 Bobadela, Portugal.

Thermoelectric (TE) materials offer a promising solution to reduce green gas emissions, decrease energy consumption, and improve energy management due to their ability to directly convert heat into electricity and vice versa. Despite their potential, integrating new TE materials into bulk TE devices remains a challenge. To change this paradigm, the preparation of highly efficient tetrahedrite nanocomposites is proposed.

For millennia, aloe vera (AV) and eucalyptus oil (EO) have been recognized as natural sources of healing and have been utilized for medicinal purposes in the realm of health. As an attempt to treat pressure sores, AV and eucalyptus oil were added as supplements to biocompatible and biodegradable poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer to synthesize nano and micro fibrous wound dressings by the electrospinning process. Additive solubility in polymeric matrix is the key parameter to achieve the synthesis of homogeneous fibers with controlled release of therapeutic oils, cure and humidity; therefore, lecithin as herbal (soybean) based emulsifier was used to control additive/polymer solubility.
