Evaluation of a Rapid Assessment Questionnaire Using a Biomarker for Dietary Intake of n-3 Fatty Acids.

While there is considerable evidence supporting health benefits of consuming diets high in omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids, there is no quick and effective tool to measure n-3 intake. The objective of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of a rapid assessment questionnaire (the Omega-3 Checklist) used to quantify intake of n-3 fatty acids. This was done by comparing n-3 intakes to blood biomarkers of n-3 exposure in a population of healthy men and women. In addition, a separate analysis was run including covariates age, sex, and weight, which have been shown to affect n-3 biomarker levels. Reported intake of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docoshexaenoic acid (DHA), and EPA + DHA was correlated with erythrocyte EPA (Spearman's rank correlation r  = 0.51, p < 0.001), DHA (r  = 0.54, p < 0.001), and the Omega-3 Index (r  = 0.57, p < 0.001). These associations remained significant when controlling for age, sex, and weight. Therefore, the Omega-3 Checklist can be a useful, rapid assessment tool to estimate individuals' EPA and DHA intake.

Based on the observation that urea, water, and ethyl esters (EE) can form gypsum-like mixtures, this study explored the feasibility of employing water as a solvent for urea in the urea complexation method to enrich n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-containing ethyl esters (DHA- EE) from Crypthecodinium cohnii as the material. Under the conditions of a urea/DHA-EE ratio of 3, a water/DHA-EE ratio of 0.75, a mixing temperature of 65℃, and a cooling temperature of 20℃, a concentrate containing over 90% DHA was achieved.

Increasing evidence suggests that organohalogen contaminants (OHCs) could disrupt lipid metabolism in organisms, prompting consideration of fatty acids (FAs) as biological tools for assessing chemical stress in biological systems. This study examined 87 OHCs and 32 FAs in two sentinel cetacean species─Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins ( = 128) and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises ( = 26)─from the northern South China Sea (NSCS), a global hotspot for OHCs. Our results revealed higher OHC levels in these cetaceans than global averages.
