Microbes are often thought of as individual cells. However, in their natural habitats, they typically exist in the context of other cells, be they of the same or different species. How these cells interact in space and time is key to their ecology and evolution. In this perspective, we consider the implications of this in terms of the future of microbiological research. This article is part of the special issue "Microbiology: how to bridge mechanisms and phenomenology" edited by Suckjoon Jun.

Soil pore space, considered the most complex biomaterial that exists, generates a complex environment, that gives rise to a wide variety of properties, such as microbial diversity and carbon storage. Soils contain, at the same time, the largest carbon reservoir on earth and an immense amount of nutrient-limited microbial biomass. The reason why this carbon is not consumed by soil microbes is attributed to the complex nature of soil, which forms a labyrinth where carbon and microbes cannot be in direct contact.

Organic raw materials are the renewable sources of substrates for our industries and for our microbial communities. As industrial, agricultural or forestry side streams, they are usually affordable if the process entities, equipment and protocols are properly designed. The microbial communities that are used as biocatalysts take care of the process development together with us or with the process team.

Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. The selection criteria for probiotics include strain safety, viability, tolerance, metabolite production and/or the ability to modulate the immune system. Probiotics are commonly used in industries, such as food, agriculture, medicine, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and aquaculture.

Interdisciplinary research is increasingly recognized as a key method to tackle complex societal challenges and stimulate creativity to find innovative solutions. Our key goal when starting our collaboration was to come to innovative ways of treating chronic pain. An ambitious goal that requires out-of-the-box and high-risk-high-gain research.
