Most of the waterborne fecal pathogens belong to the family of Gram-negative bacteria. Hence, minimal inhibitory concentrations of chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin antibiotics towards Gram-negative representative, Enterobacter aerogenes were estimated, which were 7 μg/ml and 0.125 μg/ml, respectively. The combined antimicrobial effect of chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin against E. aerogenes was also investigated to establish their potential interaction towards the pathogens present in water. Eventually, the water samples obtained from various drinking water treatment plants from Québec municipality were tested for the occurrence of chlortetracycline-, ciprofloxacin- and chlortetracycline/ciprofloxacin-resistant strains.

The emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have become a serious issue in global agricultural production. However, understanding how these ARGs spread across different spatial scales, especially when exposed to both pesticides and antibiotics, has remained a challenge. Here, metagenomic assembly and binning methodologies were used to determine the spread pathway of ARGs in the soil-lettuce system under individual and combined exposure of fungicides (carbendazim and pyraclostrobin) and antibiotics (chlortetracycline and ciprofloxacin).

The soils of different land use types in large-scaled culturing farms were collected for detecting the contents of antibiotics in these soils by applying high-performance liquid chromatography, analyzing the relationship between antibiotics and physicochemical properties of soils, as well as performing the ecological risk assessment of antibiotics in the soils of culturing farms by using the risk quotient method. We investigated the potential accumulation of tetracyclines (TCs) such as chlortetracycline (CTC), oxytetracycline (OTC) and doxycycline (DC), and fluoroquinolones (FQs) like enrofloxacin (ENR) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) in chicken litter and agricultural soils fertilized over short-term to long-term (<1-30 yrs) with chicken litter in a poultry hub for the first time from Tamil Nadu, India. CTC, OTC, DC, CIP, and ENR were detected in 46-92 % of the selected chicken litter samples, with mean levels ranging from 2.90 to 23.
