Charcoal toothpastes and powders are fashionable oral hygiene products, intended for toothbrushing, extrinsic stain removal and, it is claimed, 'tooth whitening'. The popularity of charcoal toothpastes is believed to be increasing in many countries across the world, including the UK, US, Japan, India, Thailand, Lithuania, Australia, Hong Kong, China, Korea and Switzerland, where charcoal-based toothpastes have been reported to be produced. It is understood that many patients ask members of their dental team for advice on the use and benefits of charcoal toothpastes and powders, and that such advice is often empirical. The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of the current knowledge and understanding of charcoal toothpastes and powders, including consideration of the strength of the evidence to support claims made by the manufacturers of these products.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the in vitro effect of a charcoal-containing dentifrice with different toothbrush stiffness on enamel.
Methods: Four main groups were applied: distilled water, conventional fluoridated toothpaste (Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint Toothpaste), charcoal toothpaste (Colgate Total Charcoal Toothpaste) and whitening toothpaste (Colgate Total Advanced Whitening Toothpaste). Three subgroups for each toothpaste were further included according to the toothbrush bristles' stiffness (soft, medium, and hard).

Introduction: Among the wide variety of commercially oral hygiene products, activated charcoal-based toothpastes have irrupted the market, claiming multiple benefits. Although most are fluoride free, others incorporate fluoride into their formulations, yet the chemical availability and stability of fluoride in these products remain unclear. Our study aimed to assess the chemical availability and stability of fluoride in commercially fluoridated toothpastes formulated with activated charcoal.

Aim: To assess the gloss and gloss retention of two esthetic restorative materials after brushing with a charcoal-infused toothbrush and activated charcoal toothpaste compared to their standard counterparts in all possible combinations.
Materials And Methods: In this study,104 disc-shaped specimens were prepared, 52 from each of the two materials: Beautifil II LS composite resin (Giomer) and Fuji II LC resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI). Specimens of each material were divided into 4 groups ( = 13) according to the tested brushing procedure: group A-standard toothbrush + standard non-whitening toothpaste (S-S), group B-standard toothbrush + activated charcoal toothpaste (S-CH), group C-charcoal-infused toothbrush + standard non-whitening toothpaste (CH-S), and group D-charcoal-infused toothbrush + activated-charcoal toothpaste (CH-CH).
