Simultaneous determination of 50 antibiotic residues in plasma by HPLC-MS/MS.

Exposure to low doses of antibiotics in organisms may have long-term effects on host growth and brain neurochemicals, which are achieved by disrupting the composition and metabolism of gut flora. Therefore, we should pay more attention to the use and management of antibiotics to protect human health and the ecological environment. Here, we developed a method of detecting 50 antibiotic residues simultaneously in human plasma using HPLC-MS/MS.

The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) must be transformed into Water Resource Recovery Facilities (WRRFs) in view of a more sustainable approach focusing on the circular economy concept. Different to WWTPs, the WRRFs have as a major goal not only the wastewater treatment to meet the legislation limits but also the recovery of resources such as: treated water for water reuse, carbon, nutrients, biopolymers etc. In view of boosting the WRRFs application in the real WWTs, a WRRF at Palermo University (UNIPA) has been built within the EU project: Achieving Wider-Uptake of Water Smart Solutions.

Background: Severe acute malnutrition (SAM) is a severe condition causing bilateral pitting edema or signs of wasting in children, with a high mortality risk. An outpatient therapeutic program is recommended for managing SAM children without complications, but there is limited information on recovery time and its determinants.

Objective: This study aims to assess the time to recovery and its predictors among children aged 6-59 months with SAM admitted to the Outpatient therapeutic program in the Borena zone, Oromia region, Southern Ethiopia in 2023.

Health-seeking behaviours and traditional healer practices for snakebite in rural and tribal communities in southern India.

Trans R Soc Trop Med Hyg

January 2025

The Wellcome Trust Research Laboratory, Division of Gastrointestinal Sciences, Christian Medical College, Vellore 632004, Tamil Nadu, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Nearly 60,000 people in India die from snakebites each year, mainly in rural and tribal areas, prompting a study on snakebite epidemiology and treatment in Tamil Nadu.
  • A cross-sectional survey revealed that snakebite incidence and mortality rates were similar in two studied regions, with high reliance on traditional healers for initial treatment, particularly in Jawadhu Hills.
  • Major challenges include the use of dangerous first aid practices, poor communication between traditional healers and the healthcare system, and insufficient transportation options to health facilities, necessitating community awareness and better public transport solutions.

One of the leading challenges in Water Resource Recovery Facility monitoring and control is the poor data quality and sensor consistency due to the tough and complex circumstances of the process operation. This paper presents a new principal component analysis fault detection approach for the nitrate and nitrite concentration sensor based on Water Resource Recovery Facility measurements, together with the Fisher Discriminant Analysis identification of fault types. Five malfunction cases were considered: constant additive error, ramp changing error in time, incorrect amplification error, random additive error, and unchanging sensor value error.
