Aromatic N-heterocyclic compounds are very important chemicals, which are currently produced mostly from petroleum. Here we report that a pyridazine-based compound 6-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)pyridazin-3(2H)-one (GSPZ) can be efficiently synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of guaiacol and succinic anhydride, both of which can be derived from biomass. GSPZ is then treated with bio-based epichlorohydrin to prepare the epoxy resin precursor GSPZ-EP. With 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane as curing agent, GSPZ-EP possesses higher glass transition temperature (187 C vs. 173 C) and shows a 140%, 70 and 93% increase in char yield (in N), storage modulus (30 C) and Young's modulus, respectively when compared with a standard petroleum-based bisphenol A epoxy resin. Moreover, the cured GSPZ-EP shows good intrinsic flame retardancy properties and is very close to the V-0 rating of UL-94 test. This work opens the door for production of aromatic N-heterocyclic compounds, which can be derived from biomass and employed to construct high performance polymers.

Biostimulants stimulate plant growth and tolerance to salinity stress, which creates unfavorable conditions for plant growth from emergence to harvest; however, little is known about their roles in triggering salt tolerance. Therefore, the study aimed to determine how applying a foliar plant-derived biostimulant (Aminolom Enzimatico® 24%) affects the growth (leaf area, biomass weight, root diameter, root fresh weight, and water-soluble dry matter), physiology (chlorophyll content, electrolyte leakage, cell membrane stability, and relative water content), and stomata of the lower and upper parts of leaves in radish plants ( L.) under salinity stress.

Electrochemical oxidation of biomass-derived 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) provides an environmentally friendly route for producing the sustainable polymer monomer 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). Thus, precisely adjusting the synergistic adsorption among key reactive species, such as HMF and OH, on the carefully designed catalyst surface is essential for achieving satisfactory catalytic performance for HMF oxidation to FDCA as it is closely related to the adsorption strength and configuration of the reaction substrates. This kind of regulation will ultimately facilitate the improvement of HMF oxidation performance.

Escalating energy demands have often ignited ground-breaking innovations in the current era of electrochemical energy storage systems. Supercapacitors (SCs) have emerged as frontrunners in this regard owing to their exclusive features such ultra-high cyclic stability, power density, and ability to be derived from sustainable sources. Despite their promising attributes, they typically fail in terms of energy density, which poses a significant hindrance to their widespread commercialization.

Developing efficient strategies for the deoxygenative functionalization of carbonyl compounds is crucial for enhancing the effective utilization of biomass and the upgrading of chemical feedstocks. In this study, we present an elegant cathodic reduction strategy that enables a tandem alkylation/dearomatization reaction between quinoline derivatives and aryl aldehydes/ketones in a one-pot process. Our approach can be executed via two distinct paths: the aluminum (Al)-facilitated spin-center shift (SCS) path and the Al-facilitated direct deoxygenation path.
