AI Article Synopsis

  • Fusarium wilt of banana is caused by a specific soilborne fungal pathogen, with two major strains identified: race 1 and tropical race 4.
  • Researchers developed chromosome-level genome assemblies for these strains using advanced single-molecule sequencing techniques, achieving significant improvements in data quality.
  • The new genome references, with larger contig sizes, will aid in comparing different strains of the pathogen, enhancing understanding of its pathogenicity.

Article Abstract

Fusarium wilt of banana is caused by the soilborne fungal pathogen f. sp. . We generated two chromosome-level assemblies of f. sp. race 1 and tropical race 4 strains using single-molecule real-time sequencing. The f. sp. race 1 and tropical race 4 assemblies had 35 and 29 contigs with contig N50 lengths of 2.08 and 4.28 Mb, respectively. These two new references genomes represent a greater than 100-fold improvement over the contig N50 statistics of the previous short-read-based f. sp. assemblies. The two high-quality assemblies reported here will be a valuable resource for the comparative analysis of f. sp. races at the pathogenic level.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the perspectives of healthcare professionals on the utility of sick day management plans for people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) in remote communities and collaboratively design a sick day management plan resource.

Design: This qualitative study utilised two phases of data collection: preliminary observational data and semi-structured interviews. The research design and analysis were guided by the normalisation process theory (NPT) framework, tailored for complex interventions in healthcare.

Background: CONCORD-3 highlighted wide disparities in population-based 5-year net survival for cutaneous melanoma during 2000-2014. Studies showed a survival advantage in women, but the reasons are not completely understood. We aim to estimate trends in age-standardised 5-year net survival by sex and to examine the role of age, anatomic location and stage on the survival advantage for women worldwide.

Importance: Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) can lead to a range of developmental and neurological issues, which increases the risk of early death. However, the all-cause and cause-specific mortality in children with CZS in the first 5 years of life remain unknown.

Objective: To compare the hazard of all-cause and cause-specific mortality before age 5 years among children with and without CZS in Brazil.

Background: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has had a detrimental impact on the healthcare system. Patients with kidney failure and related kidney disease are notably vulnerable to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it remains unclear how mortality trends associated with kidney failure have evolved over the past three years.
