Monitoring the early onset of bacterial film formation is critical in many clinical, environmental, and food quality control applications. We built a small inexpensive optical surface cytometer, in contrast with bulk spectroscopic methods, around a light-emitting diode (LED) and a complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) image sensor. It is designed to offer a large field-of-view of 200 mm and a large depth-of-field of 2-3 mm to overcome the limitations of routine methods like spectrophotometry and fluorescence microscopy. It provides a direct measurement without the need for complex image post-processing with a limit-of-detection around 10 cells/mm, which is competitive with other similar yet more complex devices already available.

The discovery of broadly protective antibodies to the influenza virus neuraminidase (NA) has raised interest in NA as a vaccine target. However, recombinant, solubilized tetrameric NA ectodomains are often challenging to express and isolate, hindering the study of anti-NA humoral responses. To address this obstacle, we established a panel of 22 non-adherent cell lines stably expressing native, historical N1, N2, N3, N9, and NB NAs anchored on the cell surface.

Oncolytic measles virus-induced cell killing in radio-resistant and drug-resistant nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Malays J Pathol

December 2024

Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, M. Kandiah Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Department of Pre-clinical Sciences, Bandar Sungai Long, 43000, Kajang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Introduction: The current first-line therapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is often associated with long-term complications. Oncolytic measles virus (MV) therapy offers a promising alternative to cancer therapy. This study aims to investigate the efficacy of MV in killing NPC cells in vitro, both with or without resistance to radiation and drug therapy.

This study focused on the development of cholesterol-free fusogenic liposomes with different surface charge with the aim of improving biofilm penetration. In vitro assessments of the liposomes included physical stability, biocompatibility, fusion with microbial cells, and the ability to penetrate established biofilms. Using dynamic light scattering, cholesterol-free, fusogenic liposomes were found to be < 200 nm in size with small size distribution (PDI < 0.

Anti-Bacterial and Anti-Biofilm Activities of Essential Oil from Blanco cv. Tankan Peel Against .

Foods

November 2024

Guangdong Key Laboratory of Science and Technology of Lingnan Specialty Food, Guangzhou 510225, China.

In recent years, plant essential oils have been confirmed as natural inhibitors of foodborne pathogens. Blanco cv. Tankan peel essential oil (CPEO) showed anti- (LM) activities, and this study investigated the associated mechanisms by using high-resolution electron microscope, fluorescence spectrometer, flow cytometer, potentiometer, and transcriptome sequencing.

COVID-19 pandemic led to the rapid development of antibody-based therapeutics and vaccines targeting the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Several antibodies have been instrumental in protecting vulnerable populations, but their utility was limited by the emergence of spike variants with diminished susceptibility to antibody binding and neutralization. Moreover, these spike variants exhibited reduced neutralization by polyclonal antibodies in vaccinated individuals.
