A new method is presented for performing the Abel inversion by fitting the line-of-sight projection of a predefined intensity distribution (FLiPPID) to the recorded 2D projections. The aim is to develop a methodology that is less prone to experimental noise when analyzing the projection of axisymmetric objects-in this case, co-flow diffusion flame images for color ratio pyrometry. A regression model is chosen for the light emission intensity distribution of the flame cross section as a function of radial distance from the flame center line. The forward Abel transform of this model function is fitted to the projected light intensity recorded by a color camera. For each of the three color channels, the model function requires three fitting parameters to match the radial intensity profile at each height above the burner. This results in a very smooth Abel inversion with no artifacts such as oscillations or negative values of the light source intensity, as is commonly observed for alternative Abel inversion techniques, such as the basis-set expansion or onion peeling. The advantages of the new FLiPPID method are illustrated by calculating the soot temperature and volume fraction profiles inside a co-flow diffusion flame, both being significantly smoother than those produced by the alternative inversion methods. The developed FLiPPID methodology can be applied to numerous other optical techniques for which smooth inverse Abel transforms are required.
A diagnostic system for measuring the effective charge in the versatile experiment spherical torus (VEST) has been developed. The system utilizes a toroidal array to observe the plasma radius on the low magnetic field side, providing a spatially resolved Zeff. The target wavelength of visible bremsstrahlung (VB) was carefully selected to avoid contamination by line emissions.
A soft x-ray (SX) diagnostic system has been designed and installed in JT-60SA for the first plasma. For quantitative measurement, the etendue of each viewing chord was evaluated analytically and numerically. The electron temperature is evaluated from the detected bremsstrahlung emission ratio between two detector arrays with two different thicknesses of Be filters.

In the tokamak ASDEX Upgrade, Integrated Data Analysis (IDA) is used to infer plasma quantities, such as electron density, using heterogeneous data sources. Essential is forward modeling from the parameter space into the data space with physically reasonable models for probabilistic evaluation. This paper presents a new forward model for O-mode profile reflectometry, a necessary prerequisite for Bayesian inference and inclusion in IDA.
Among the most popular methods to measure dust density in a laboratory setup are 1D extinction, Abel inversion for circularly symmetric geometries, and computer tomography (CT) for arbitrary geometries. We present a new method based on a 1D extinction measurement in correlation with a video taken at an acute angle. It works well with limited optical access and has a good time resolution (at least several hertz).
