Starbursts seen around small bright lights at night have been attributed to optical scatter, diffraction, or aberrations. We manipulated pupil aperture and aberrations to investigate the entopic appearance of perceived starbursts. The impact of circular, annular, and wedge-shaped pupil apertures, and spherical aberration sign and magnitude were used to identify pupil sub-apertures responsible for each radial perceived starburst line. Local intensity distributions within the starbursts mapped onto unique sub-regions of the pupil of both phakic and pseudophakic eyes, consistent with the hypothesis that ocular aberrations are the cause of starbursts. In paraxially focused eyes, the size of starbursts is predicted by the amount of spherical aberration, and starburst orientation is either the same or 180 deg rotated from the pupil region that creates each starburst line. No starbursts are seen when the pupil diameter is smaller than 3 mm. Replacing the eye's natural lens with a radially symmetric and optically homogeneous intraocular lens reduced the observed number of starbursts by 50%. Geometrical optics modeling including the measured aberrations of an individual eye can reveal point spread function structure that captures some of the key elements of the entopic perceptions.

Photic phenomena are more pronounced in presbyopia-corrected than in monofocal intraocular lens (IOL), causing dissatisfaction after cataract surgery. Photic Phenomena Test (PPT) quantifies photic phenomena in eyes with two types of presbyopia-corrected IOL. We examined the relationship between preoperative eye shape and pupil diameter.

Introduction: Diffractive trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs) provide good vision at distance, intermediate, and near, but can also cause positive dysphotopsias. This meta-analysis pooled published evidence on visual disturbances after bilateral implantation of the PanOptix (TFNTXX) IOL for patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Method: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and congress presentations from April 2021 to December 2022 to identify studies with patient-reported outcomes on the incidence of visual disturbances (starbursts, halos, glare) post bilateral implantation of PanOptix IOL during cataract surgery.

This study aimed to assess how ursolic acid (UA) can protect human skin keratinocytes from damage caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Utilizing an omics-based approach, we characterized the features of photodamage and investigated the potential of UA to reverse HaCaT cell subpopulation injury caused by UVB radiation. The most significant changes in metabolite levels after UA treatment were in pathways associated with phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism.

A new system and methodology are introduced to evaluate photic phenomena induced by different intraocular lens (IOL) technologies using a "see-through" IOL analyzer system in phakic subjects. Nineteen phakic subjects looked through the Groningen IOL Telescope type 1 (GIT1) system under different conditions. Four different IOL designs with different clinical levels of photic phenomena were evaluated by the subjects.
