Child- and Proxy-reported Differences in Patient-reported Outcome and Experience Measures in Pediatric Surgery: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

J Pediatr Surg

January 2025

Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, Canada; Harvey E. Beardmore Division of Pediatric Surgery, The Montreal Children's Hospital, McGill University Health Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Purpose: Pediatric health outcomes are often assessed using proxy reports, which may not fully capture children's experiences. Children with surgical conditions face unique, changing healthcare journeys, making accurate representation challenging. This review compares child-reported health status and treatment experiences from Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and Patient-Reported Experience Measures (PREMs) with parent reports.

Brain connectivity, neural networks, and resilience in aging and neurodegeneration.

Am J Pathol

January 2025

Center for the Neural Basis of Cognition; Department of Pathology; Department of Bioengineering; McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA. Electronic address:

The importance of complex systems has become increasingly evident in recent years. The nervous system is one such example with neural networks sitting at the intersection of complex networks and biology. A particularly exciting feature is the resilience of complex systems.

The brain faces the challenging task of preserving a consistent portrayal of the external world in the face of disruptive sensory inputs. What alterations occur in sensory representation amidst noise, and how does brain activity adapt to it? Although it has previously been shown that background white noise (WN) decreases responses to salient sounds, a mechanistic understanding of the brain processes responsible for such changes is lacking. We investigated the effect of background WN on neuronal spiking activity, membrane potential, and network oscillations in the mouse central auditory system.

Life cycle assessment and industrial synergy for carbon reduction: A circular economy approach.

Sci Total Environ

January 2025

Geology and Sustainable Mining Institute, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, Lot 660, Hay Moulay Rachid, Ben Guerir 43150, Morocco.

In the face of the climate change crisis, circular economy (CE) is put forward as a promising key to the sustainable development goals (SDGs) riddle. In this context that affects developed and developing countries alike, circular initiatives arise, such is the case for Morocco where an industrial synergy based on the CE concept of 'waste is food' can be envisioned between the local phosphate and cement industries. In order to support and guide this initiative, a life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to compare the environmental performance of the production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) and a phosphate waste-based cement known as calcined marl cement (CMC).

Climate Change-Induced Decline in Succulent in Namibia's Arid Regions.

Plants (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Plant and Soil Sciences, University of Pretoria, Hatfield, Pretoria P.O. Box X20, South Africa.

The global rise in temperatures due to climate change has made it difficult even for specialised desert-adapted plant species to survive on sandy desert soils. Two of Namibia's iconic desert-adapted plant species, and the quiver tree , have recently been shown to be under threat because of climate change. In the current study, three ecologically important Namibian milk bushes were evaluated for their climate change response.
