Atypical chemokine receptor 3 (ACKR3), previously known as C-X-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CXCR7), has emerged as a key player in several biologic processes, particularly during development. Its CXCL11 and CXCL12 scavenging activity and atypical signaling properties, together with a new array of other nonchemokine ligands, have established ACKR3 as a main regulator of physiologic processes at steady state and during inflammation. Here, we present a comprehensive review of ACKR3 expression in mammalian tissues in search of a possible connection with the receptor function. Besides the reported roles of ACKR3 during development, we discuss the potential contribution of ACKR3 to the function of the immune system, focusing on the myeloid lineage.

Background: Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) often results from neuroinflammation. Recent studies have shown that brain platelet-derived growth factor receptor β (PDGFRβ) cells, including pericytes, may act as early sensors of infection by secreting monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1), which transmits inflammatory signals to the central nervous system. The erythroblast transformation-specific (ETS) transcription factor Friend leukemia virus integration 1 (Fli-1) plays a critical role in inflammation by regulating the expression of key cytokines, including MCP-1.

Peripheral blood mononuclear cells' (PBMCs) mitochondrial respiration is impaired and likely involved in myocardial injury and heart failure pathophysiology, but its response to acute and severe hypoxia, often associated with such diseases, is largely unknown in humans. We therefore determined the effects of acute hypoxia on PBMC mitochondrial respiration and ROS production in healthy volunteers exposed to controlled oxygen reduction, achieving an inspired oxygen fraction of 10.5%.

The aim of this work was to explore the biomarkers associated with epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) and mineralization processes as new prognostic factors across different breast cancer phenotypes. To this end, 133 breast biopsies, including benign and malignant lesions, with or without microcalcifications, were retrospectively collected. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to evaluate the expression of vimentin, BMP-2, BMP-4, RANKL, Runx2, OPN, PTX3, and SDF-1, while Kaplan-Meier plots were used to assess their prognostic impact on overall survival in a dataset of 2976 breast cancer patients.
