In east Asia, "Baishouwu" has been used as an herbal drug and functional dietary supplement for hundreds of years. Actually, "Baishouwu" is the common name of the roots of , , and . In the present study, roots of these three specie were extracted and then fractionated using petroleum ether (PE), dichloromethane (DCM), ethyl acetate (EA), and water. DPPH scavenging experiments revealed high antioxidant activity of DCM and EA fractions of and the EA fraction of . Treatments with these three fractions significantly reduced malondialdehyde content in heat-stressed , validating in vivo antioxidant activity. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analyses demonstrated that the chemical components of fractions extracted from , , and were different. Further determination of total phenol and total flavonoids contents showed that DCM and EA fractions of and EA fraction of had much higher contents of total phenol and total flavonoids, which might be the reason to explain their strong antioxidant activity. Overall, the present study suggested that these three plants have different chemical components and biological activities. They could not be used as the same drug.

Silica-Activated Redox Signaling Confers Rice with Enhanced Drought Resilience and Grain Yield.

ACS Nano

January 2025

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing 210023, China.

Under a changing climate, enhancing the drought resilience of crops is critical to maintaining agricultural production and reducing food insecurity. Here, we demonstrate that seed priming with amorphous silica (SiO) nanoparticles (NPs) (20 mg/L) accelerated seed germination speed, increased seedlings vigor, and promoted seedling growth of rice under polyethylene glycol (PEG)-mimicking drought conditions. An orthogonal approach was used to uncover the mechanisms of accelerated seed germination and enhanced drought tolerance, including electron paramagnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), metabolomics, and transcriptomics.

Tyrosinase is a rate-limiting enzyme for melanogenesis and abnormal melanin production can be controlled by utilizing tyrosinase inhibitory substances. To develop potent and safe inhibitors of tyrosinase, complex tannins a narrowly distributed plant polyphenols were prepared from the fruit peel of Euryale ferox (EPTs) and then structurally characterized, as well as investigated for their inhibitory effects and the involved mechanisms against tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis. The structures of EPTs were established to consist of 63.

Beijing Key Laboratory for Bioengineering and Sensing Technology, Daxing Research Institute, School of Chemistry and Biological Engineering, University of Science and Technology Beijing, Beijing 100083, China. Electronic address:

This study focuses on the development and application of tea polyphenol-loaded chitosan/polyaspartic acid nanoparticles (TP@CS/PASP-Nps) embedded within polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers to extend the shelf life of fruit. The nanofibers were fabricated using electrospinning, which enhanced the stability and uniform dispersion of the nanoparticles. Experimental results demonstrated that the TP@CS/PASP nanoparticles exhibit significant pH and protease-responsive release of TP, with a cumulative release of 56.

Food Packaging Technology Department, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh 201002, India. Electronic address:

Multifunctional PLA films were fabricated through the solution casting method by incorporating cardanol oil (CA) and amine-functionalized graphene (AFG). The effect of the CA, and AFG on the structural, mechanical, thermal, thermo-mechanical and antioxidant properties of PLA films were investigated. FTIR analysis of PLA-CA films showed distinct peak positions at 1590 cm corresponding to the aromatic CC bonds of CA, showing that CA is compatible with the PLA.
