Numerous unregulated organic compounds (UOCs) including pharmaceuticals, opioids, and personal care products (PCPs) end up in wastewater. UOC presence in biosolids (a wastewater treatment byproduct), which are applied to soil for different reasons raises environmental and health risk concerns. In this study, two multi-class extraction methods were developed and validated to target 111 UOCs from 8 different major families simultaneously in biosolids and biosolids-impacted soil.

Pollution profiles, pathogenicity, and toxicity of bioaerosols in the atmospheric environment of urban general hospital in China.

Environ Pollut

January 2025

Guangdong Key Laboratory of Environmental Catalysis and Health Risk Control, School of Environmental Science and Engineering, Institute of Environmental Health and Pollution Control, Guangdong University of Technology, Guangzhou 510006, China.

Airborne microorganisms in hospitals present significant health risks to both patients and employees. However, their pollution profiles and associated hazards in different hospital areas remained largely unknown during the extensive use of masks and disinfectants. This study investigated the characteristics of bioaerosols in an urban general hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic and found that airborne bacteria and fungi concentrations range from 87±35 to 1037±275 CFU/m and 21±15 to 561±132 CFU/m, respectively, with the outpatient clinic and internal medicine ward showing the highest levels.

Quantification and profiling of urine cells by integrated cytocentrifugation and infrared spectroscopy.

Spectrochim Acta A Mol Biomol Spectrosc

January 2025

Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Valencia, Dr. Moliner 50, 46100 Burjassot, Spain. Electronic address:

The presence of cells in urine and in particular White Blood Cells (WBCs) is often associated with Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) and other diseases. Non-invasive screening of WBCs requires the development of cost-effective point of care diagnostic tools. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy has the potential to identify and quantify cells in urine.

Background: With Direct Acting Antivirals for Hepatitis C virus (HCV), cure is possible in > 95% including those with HIV/HCV co-infection. Achieving strategic targets for cure requires addressing barriers including suboptimal care engagement. We adapted Data to Care (D2C), a public health strategy designed to identify and link persons out of care (OOC) for HIV, for persons with HIV/HCV co-infection untreated for HCV.

Background: Prehospital emergencies require providers to rapidly identify patients' medical condition and determine treatment needs. We tested whether medics' initial, written impressions of patient condition contain information that can help identify patients who require prehospital lifesaving interventions (LSI) prior to or during transport.

Methods: We analyzed free-text medic impressions of prehospital patients encountered at the scene of an accident or injury, using data from STAT MedEvac air medical transport service from 2012 to 2021.
