Background: Constrictive pericarditis is a rare condition which is characterized by pericardial layers thickening and it may not be relieved by conventional medical or surgical therapies. Some patients could profit from specific surgical techniques such as the waffle procedure which removes epicardial tissue strips of the visceral layer of the pericardium. It alleviates diastolic dysfunction, since it is known that the constrictive physiology observed in constrictive pericarditis depends mainly on the visceral layer.

Case Summary: We describe the case of a 59-year-old male complaining of predominantly right heart failure symptoms. Initially, a transthoracic echocardiogram showed pericardial effusion with several fibrous tracts and a constrictive pattern. The work-up was completed with thoracic computed tomography and right heart catheterization along with several microbiological, serological and immunological tests. The final diagnosis was idiopathic constrictive pericarditis. The clinical course was unfavourable, and the patient was referred for prompt surgical treatment using a technique called the waffle procedure. Subsequently, the patient has remained asymptomatic.

Discussion: Constrictive pericarditis combines features of both constriction and tamponade. Some patients may present an unfavourable clinical course with conventional therapeutic approaches. They could benefit from the waffle procedure which allows an improvement in diastolic and, subsequently, in systolic function.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research used a tape casting technique to produce larger PLA-oil films that required less solvent, and these films were analyzed for various properties, including their antimicrobial effectiveness, mechanical strength, and moisture barrier capabilities.
  • * Results showed that the 50 wt% essential oil blend significantly extended the shelf-life of waffles from 2 days to 30 days, with Vanilla effectively masking the odor of T. ammi and confirming the films' time-released oil properties through infrared spectroscopy.

Salt Resistant PPy/MXene Flexible Waffle Type Fabric for Efficient Solar Evaporation and Water Purification Production.

School of Material Science and Engineering, Shaanxi Key Laboratory of Green Preparation and Functionalization for Inorganic Materials, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Xi'an, 710021, China.

In recent years, with the development of solar seawater desalination technology, many solar evaporators are affected by precipitated salts during the evaporation process, which can reduce efficiency. In this work, flexible fabrics made of polypyrrole (PPy)/MXene are obtained by impregnating the prepared PPy ink onto waffle like fabrics. The combination of PPy and fabric greatly improves the water absorption and evaporation performance of the fabric.

We should consider IgG4-related disease (IGRD) as one of the potential causes of constrictive pericarditis. In patients with constrictive pericarditis due to IGRD, the combination of surgical treatment and immunosuppressive therapy may be an effective strategy.
