B cell immunity carries the inherent risk of deviating into autoimmunity and malignancy, which are both strongly associated with genetic variants or alterations that increase immune signaling. Here, we investigated the interplay of autoimmunity and lymphoma risk factors centered around the archetypal negative immune regulator TNFAIP3/A20 in mice. Counterintuitively, B cells with moderately elevated sensitivity to stimulation caused fatal autoimmune pathology, while those with high sensitivity did not.

Objectives: Motor vehicle travel shifts during the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in fewer vehicle miles traveled yet paradoxically higher fatality rates. Anecdotally, the paradox was blamed on increases in risky behavior in the absence of regular traffic and enforcement. We examined three hypotheses to explain the fatality paradox using Michigan crash data: (1) lack of congestion led to higher-speed impacts; (2) increased risky driver/driving; and (3) low-risk driving miles decreased.

Flavivirus infection, especially dengue virus infection caused by DENV, is known to be a significant health concern globally owing to the high incidence and mortality rate. The expanding and increasing disease burden calls for the need to develop an effective treatment and prevent the event of fatal complications, including dengue hemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome. The DENV-induced immune response has been described as paradoxical because it has a protective role in viral clearance but, at the same time, causes more severe infection through viral-specific immunity.

Antioxidants have a well-established effect on general health and are essential in preventing oxidative damage to cells by scavenging free radicals. Free radicals are thought to be neutralized by these substances, which include polyphenols, β-carotene, and vitamins C and E, reducing cellular damage. On the other hand, recent data indicates that consuming excessive amounts of antioxidants may have side effects.
