The oxygen transfer rate (OTR) has a significant impact on the design and operation of vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) intended for organic matter removal and nitrification. Despite its key role, the information on real oxygen input in VFCWs is limited, being usually estimated by mass balance (stoichiometry), through which is calculated only the oxygen consumption rate (OCR). In this study, for the first time, the gas tracer method was applied to evaluate the oxygen transfer capacity of a real-scale VFCW (24.5 m) applied to the treatment of domestic wastewater. Propane was used as tracer. The OCR and the OTR were evaluated in VFCW under hydraulic loading rates (HLR) of 60, 90, and 120 mm d corresponding to recirculation rations of 0%, 50%, and 100%. The OTR in standard conditions (20 °C) ranged from 120 to 176 g O m d. The highest OTR was found for the lowest HLR. For the operating conditions tested, the OTR obtained with gas tracer were higher than the OCR calculated by stoichiometry in VFCW, which ranged from 20.6 to 27.8 g O m d. Besides, the OTR were sufficient to satisfy the VFCW oxygen demand for organic matter removal and nitrification. These results show that the gas tracer method for OTR determination may allow advances on the understanding of treatment processes and on the design of new VFCWs since its treatment performance requires aerobic conditions.

The bi-transition-metal interstitial compounds (BTMICs) are promising for water electrolysis. The previous BTMICs are usually composed of irregular particles. Here, this work shows the synthesis of novel 1D CoMoC-based heterojunction nanowires (1D Co/CoMoC) with diameters about 50 nm and a length-to-diameter ratio about 20 for efficient water electrolysis.

Direct electrochemical detection of miRNA biomarkers in tumor tissue interstitial fluid (TIF) holds great promise for adjuvant therapy for tumors in the perioperative period, yet is limited by background interference and weak signal. Herein, a wash-free and separation-free miRNA biosensor based on photoexcited electro-driven reactive oxygen channeling analysis (LEOCA) is developed to solve the high-fidelity detection in physiological samples. In the presence of miRNA, nanoacceptors (ultrasmall-size polydopamine, uPDA) are responsively assembled on the surface of nanodonors (zirconium metal-organic framework, ZrMOF) to form core-satellite aggregates.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are increasingly used in various consumer products and industrial applications, raising concerns about their environmental impact on aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the physicochemical stability, trophic transfer, and toxic effects of citrate-coated AgNPs in a freshwater food chain including the diatom Cyclotella meneghiniana and the gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis. AgNPs remained stable in the exposure medium, with a minimal dissolution (<0.

Objective: To investigate the effect of viral co-infections on treatment length and treatment failure in children with lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) supported with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or high-flow nasal cannula oxygenation therapy (HFNC).
Methods: Patients aged 0-5 years hospitalized with viral LRTI and in need of respiratory support between August 1 and December 31, 2021, were retrospectively evaluated by patient chart audits.
Results: A total of 148 children (median age 10.

The integration of ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) catalytic paradigms with radical intermediates has transformed the selective functionalization of inert C-H bonds, facilitating the use of nonprecious metal catalysts in demanding transformations. Notably, aerobic C-H carbonylation of methane to acetic acid remains formidable due to the rapid oxidation of methyl radicals, producing undesired C1 oxygenates. We present an iron terpyridine catalyst utilizing LMCT to achieve exceptional C2/C1 selectivity through synergistic photoexcitation, methyl radical generation, and carbonylation.
