Evaluating Cost-effectiveness and Mixing Efficacy for Elastomeric and Temporary Restorative Material Using Two Mixing Tips: A SEM-EDS Analysis.

J Contemp Dent Pract

September 2024

Department of Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge, Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed to be University, Dental College and Hospital, Pune, Maharashtra, India, ORCID: https://orcid.org/0009-0008-7338-1699.

Aim: This study aimed to compare the mixing efficacy and cost-effectiveness of new T-mixer tips against the standard double helical tips for a light-body elastomeric impression and a temporary/interim restorative material using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy.

Methodology: Automixed samples ( = 16) were divided into four groups of four samples each: Samples that were mixed with Helical tip for elastomer, T-mixer tip for elastomer, Helical tip for interim restorative material, and T-mixer tip for interim restorative material. These samples were then evaluated for SEM analysis.

Background Auto-polymerizing acrylic resins, composed primarily of poly(methyl methacrylate) and methyl methacrylate, are crucial in prosthetic dentistry due to their ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and acceptable aesthetics, polymerizing at room temperature to form solid polymer networks. One of the most important mechanical properties of these resins is flexural strength, which is essential for their performance under continuous masticatory forces. In clinical applications, prosthetic materials endure repetitive stress from chewing, and resins with higher flexural strength are better equipped to resist deformation and fractures.

Temporary dental fillers are critical for safeguarding teeth during the period between caries removal and permanent restoration. However, conventional fillers often lack sufficient antimicrobial properties to prevent bacterial colonization. To address this issue, the study researches on the development of antimicrobial Temporary Dental Nano-Fillers (TDNF) capable of targeting multiple cariogenic pathogens, including , , , and mixed-species planktonic cells/biofilms, which play a significant role in the progression of dental caries.

Evaluation of the Colour Stability and Surface Roughness of Polymethylmethacrylate and Indirect Composites With and Without Ageing: An In-Vitro Study.

Department of Prosthodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, IND.

Background: Indirect restorations are a staple restorative option in dentistry due to their versatility, exceptional aesthetics, and desirable strength and longevity. Metal ceramics and all ceramics are the material of choice for permanent restorations but come with certain disadvantages, such as chipping, fracture, and wear of the antagonist tooth or restoration. Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and indirect composite resins are commonly used materials due to their favourable properties for temporary restorations, but lately, they have been chosen as the restorative material of choice for implant-supported full-mouth rehabilitations.

Porcelain laminate veneers (PLV) offer a conservative aesthetic solution for interdental space closure. However, space is typically not distributed symmetrically, and the mesiodistal width of the restored teeth may increase unless multiple teeth are prepared for conventional PLV to maintain appropriate individual tooth proportion. Ceramic fragments can be suggested to close the space without modifying tooth size and dental proportion.
