Aim: To evaluate quality of the Family Health Strategy (FHS) in the National Program for Improving Access and Quality of Primary Care in the Federal District (FD) from the perspective of users.

Methods: Evaluative research carried out in 25 basic health units of the Federal District through a validated questionnaire assessing the following dimensions: access, gateway, bond, service range, coordination, family focus, community orientation, and health professionals.

Results: Service provision, qualification of professionals, quality of professional-user relationship, and continuity of care were the best evaluated dimensions, while family approach, community approach, and access were the worst. Access to the FHS was found to be compromised, besides failing to establish itself as gateway to the FD health system.

Conclusion: When they can access the local system, FD users do enjoy several services, but access is still a barrier, mainly because the very system is not prepared to meet users' needs/preferences. The dimensions regarding family focus and community orientation are precarious, which reveals the need for reflection on the care model adopted in the Federal District.

Land use change threatens global biodiversity and compromises ecosystem functions, including pollination and food production. Reduced taxonomic α-diversity is often reported under land use change, yet the impacts could be different at larger spatial scales (i.e.

Background: Recent research has demonstrated that the consumption of high fat diet (HFD) can lead to metabolic dysfunctions and cognitive impairments in both mice models and humans. Given the potential negative effects of HFD, it is crucial to explore non-pharmacological alternatives that can serve as a potential treatment for both metabolic dysfunctions and behavioral effects induced by HFD. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the impact of chronic and intermittent exposure to cold temperature on the metabolic and cognitive changes associated with HFD consumption.

Cerebrospinal fluid β2-microglobulin promotes the tau pathology through microglia-astrocyte communication in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimers Res Ther

January 2025

Department of Geriatrics, The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, No.1 Youyi Road, Yuzhong District, Chongqing, 400016, China.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) β2-microglobulin (β2M) has been demonstrated as an important factor in β-amyloid (Aβ) neurotoxicity and a potential target for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, more investigation is required to ascertain the relationship between β2M and glial activities in AD pathogenesis.

Methods: In this study, 211 participants from the Alzheimer's disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) with CSF and Plasma β2M, CSF glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (sTREM2), Aβ, phosphorylated-tau (P-tau) and total tau (T-tau) were divided into four groups, stage 0, 1, 2, and suspected non-AD pathology (SNAP) based on the National Institute on Aging- Alzheimer's Association (NIA-AA) criteria.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the envelope (E) protein of SARS-CoV-2, highlighting its importance in viral assembly, release, and overall virulence, while assessing the conservation and mutation patterns across different variants of concern (VOCs).
  • Mutations were identified in various strains, notably B.1.351 and Omicron, that could compromise the effectiveness of current diagnostic RT-PCR assays by altering the E protein's stability.
  • The research underscores the need for ongoing surveillance of viral mutations to enhance diagnostic strategies and understand the evolving nature of SARS-CoV-2.

Gender-based violence among women and girls in conflict-affected areas of Northeast Amhara, Ethiopia.

Front Glob Womens Health

December 2024

Department of Health Systems and Policy, Institute of Public Health, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Gondar, Gondar, Ethiopia.

Background: Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is one of the major problems that women and girls encountered during the conflict between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF). However, there is a gap in evidence regarding gender-based violence resulting from the ongoing conflict in these areas. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of GBV and its contributing factors in the conflict-affected northeastern Amhara region of Ethiopia.
