Whooping cough also called Pertussis is a highly contagious respiratory infection that affects all age populations. Given recent pertussis outbreaks, there is an urgent need for a point-of-care (POC) device for rapid diagnosis of pertussis. Herein, we report a low-cost microfluidic POC device integrated with loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique for the rapid and accurate diagnosis of pertussis. The 3D-printed bioanalyzer housed not only the biochip but also an in-house-developed portable and fully battery-powered heater for rapid POC detection of pertussis, without the need of external electricity. The fluorescence-based results could be rapidly visualized in about one hour by the naked eye without the need for any additional instrumentation. In addition, a simple centrifuge-free sample preparation process was optimized for the efficient lysis of pertussis samples and successfully used for direct detection of bacteria in nasopharyngeal samples. High sensitivity, with a limit of detection (LOD) of 5 DNA copies per LAMP zone, and high specificity were demonstrated. We envision that the microfluidic POC device can be used in various venues such as medical clinics, schools, and other low-resource settings for the fast detection of pertussis.

Background: 3D technologies [Virtual and Augmented 3D planning, 3D printing (3DP), Additive Manufacturing (AM)] are rapidly being adopted in the healthcare sector, demonstrating their relevance in personalized medicine and the rapid development of medical devices. The study's purpose was to understand the state and evolution of 3DP/AM technologies at the Point-of-Care (PoC), its adoption, organization and process in Spanish hospitals and to understand and compare the evolution of the models, clinical applications, and challenges in utilizing the technology during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond.
Methods: This was a questionnaire-based qualitative and longitudinal study.

Point-of-care (POC) immunoassays have become convincing alternatives to traditional immunosensing methods for the sensitive and real-time detection of targets. Immunoassays based on gas-generating reactions were recently developed and have been used in various fields due to their advantages, such as rapid measurement, direct reading, simple operation, and low cost. Enzymes or nanoparticles modified with antibodies can effectively catalyze gas-generating reactions and convert immunorecognition events into gas pressure signals, which can be easily recorded by multifunctional portable devices.

A simple, rapid, and visual approach is developed to perform diagnosis of urinary tract infection (UTI) and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by employing smart bifunctional DNA (bfDNA) sensors, exonuclease III, concatermers of CuO nanoparticles (CuONPs), and gold NPs (AuNPs) aggregation [AuNPs agglutination (AA)], namely, the bfDEC-AA method. The bfDNA sensors serve as probes for identifying 16S rRNA genes of bacterium or 18S rRNA of fungus and as mediators connecting the concatermers of CuONPs. The AA as a signal source is triggered by Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition click chemistry.

This study explores a quick, low-cost method to detect Alzheimer's disease (AD) by evaluating the accomplishment of a Gate-Stack (GS) Field Effect Transistor (FET). We investigate Single-Metal (SM), Dual-Metal (DM), and Tri-Metal Double Gate (DG) configurations, where cavities have been created by etching the oxide layer underneath the gate to immobilize grey matter samples collected through Solid-phase microextraction (SPME). Healthy and AD-affected grey matter have different dielectric characteristics at high frequencies.

The COVID-19 outbreak has led to notable developments in point-of-care (POC) diagnostic devices, as they can be valuable resources in identifying and managing the spread of the pandemic. Currently, the majority of techniques demand advanced laboratory equipment and professionals to execute precise, efficient, accurate, and sensitive testing. In this work, we report a new method to significantly enhance the sensitivity of microwave sensing of the SARS-CoV-2 virus by functionalizing the sensor surface using anti-SARS-CoV-2 spike antibody-gold nanoparticle (AuNPs) conjugates.
