Introduction: Regional anesthetic approach and surgical volume have been shown to outcomes in patients undergoing Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum. However, their independent relationship is not described. We investigated how regional anesthesia and surgical volume are associated with length of stay (LOS), postoperative opioid use, operating room utilization, and complications.

Background: Scoliosis surgery performed in a prone position may result in thoracic anatomical compression and alter local hemodynamics, increasing surgical risk, especially in patients with pectus excavatum. Most commonly, refractory hypotension is the first symptom of these circulatory changes. Here, we report a case with scoliosis and pectus excavatum under posterior spinal fusion that presented as a progressive decrease in the partial pressure of end-tidal CO (PCO) as the first symptom in the prone position.

Opioid-sparing anesthesia (OSA) using dexmedetomidine has gained attention as an alternative to opioid-based anesthesia (OBA) due to its potential to reduce opioid consumption and the associated side effects. This study aimed to investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine-based OSA on postoperative pain intensity, opioid consumption, and recovery outcomes in patients undergoing a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum. Eighty-four patients undergoing a minimally invasive repair of pectus excavatum were randomized to either the OSA group, receiving dexmedetomidine, or the OBA group, receiving remifentanil.

There is limited evidence regarding the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on the epidemiology of thoracic and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to investigate changes in medical visits for these conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic. We analyzed the entire Korean population (~50 million) for monthly medical visits for 15 common thoracic and cardiovascular conditions, including pneumothorax, large bullae, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, thymoma, empyema, mediastinitis, esophageal rupture, multiple rib fractures, hemothorax, rib mass, varicose vein, pectus excavatum, aortic dissection, aortic aneurysm, and valve disease from January 2019 to December 2021.
