Upward lightning is rarer than downward lightning and requires tall (100+ m) structures to initiate. It may be either self-initiated or triggered by other lightning discharges. While conventional lightning location systems (LLSs) detect most of the upward lightning flashes superimposed by pulses or return strokes, they miss a specific flash type that consists only of a continuous current.

Advancements in biosensors for cancer detection: revolutionizing diagnostics.

Med Oncol

February 2024

Faculty of Applied Sciences and Biotechnology, School of Bioengineering and Food Technology, Shoolini University, Solan, Himachal Pradesh, 173229, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer is a deadly disease that causes more deaths than any other illness worldwide.
  • Early treatment is super important, but regular screening tests can be really expensive and take a lot of time.
  • New technology, like bio-marker diagnostics, is making it easier to detect cancer early and could lead to better treatments for patients.

Becoming Woke by the ASWB Pass Rates: A Closer Look at Racial Inequities in Social Work.

J Evid Based Soc Work (2019)

March 2024

Department of Social Work, Henrietta Schmoll School of Health, St. Catherine University, St. Paul, MN, USA.

There has been widespread outrage within the social work profession regarding racial disparities in pass rates of licensing exams developed and administered by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB). The most supported remedy has been to eliminate testing for some categories of licensure with Connecticut, Illinois, and Rhode Island leading the way. Standardized testing has historically been a gatekeeping practice criticized for its exclusionary nature with no empirical evidence linking it to more competent mental health and other social work practice.

Simulation of Carbon Nanotube-Based Enhancement of Cellular Electroporation under Nanosecond Pulsed Electric Fields.

Biomed Res Int

June 2020

State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment & System Security and New Technology, Chongqing University, Chongqing 400044, China.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with large aspect ratios and excellent electrical properties can enhance the killing effect of nanosecond pulsed electric fields (nsPEFs) on tumor cells, which can improve the electrical safety of nsPEF during tumor treatment. To study the mechanism of the CNT-enhanced killing effect of a nsPEF on tumor cells, a spherical, single-cell, five-layer dielectric model containing randomly distributed CNTs was established using COMSOL and MATLAB, and then, the effects of the addition of CNTs on the electric field and the electroporation effect on the inner and outer membranes were analyzed. The results showed that CNTs can enhance the local electric field strength due to a lightning rod effect, and the closer the CNT tip was to the cell, the greater the electric field strength was around the cell.
