The surface morphology of III-V semiconductor nanowires (NWs) protected by an arsenic cap and subsequently evaporated in ultrahigh vacuum is investigated with scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning transmission electron microscopy. We show that the changes of the surface morphology as a function of the NW composition and the nature of the seed particles are intimately related to the formation and reaction of surface point defects. Langmuir evaporation close to the congruent evaporation temperature causes the formation of vacancies which nucleate and form vacancy islands on {110} sidewalls of self-catalyzed InAs NWs. However, for annealing temperatures much smaller than the congruent temperature, a new phenomenon occurs: group III vacancies form and are filled by excess As atoms, leading to surface As antisites. The resulting Ga adatoms nucleate with excess As atoms at the NW edges, producing monoatomic-step islands on the {110} sidewalls of GaAs NWs. Finally, when gold atoms diffuse from the seed particle onto the {110} sidewalls during evaporation of the protective As cap, Langmuir evaporation does not take place, leaving the sidewalls of InAsSb NWs atomically flat.

Lithium dendrite penetration through solid electrolyte has been the major obstacle for practical sulfide-based all-solid-state lithium metal batteries (ASSLMBs). Herein, a series of tailored model solid cells are designed to investigate the intrinsic lithium growth behavior at open surfaces and internal cracks of sulfide solid electrolyte. It is shown that when plating lithium on the open surface of electrolyte (free space), the lithium exhibits an intrinsic columnar growth behavior perpendicular to the electrolyte surface, preferentially along the (110) crystal axis.

This work presents, for the first time, the preparation method and subsequent use of biosilica in column liquid chromatography in reverse-phase mode. Diatom biosilica consists of the siliceous exoskeletons (frustules) of unicellular algae. Controlled cultivation of Pseudostaurosira trainorii diatoms resulted in frustules with an average diameter of approximately 4 µm, sidewall thickness of 1 µm, and a bottom thickness of 110-150 nm.

Static obstacles (tunnel sidewalls, barricades, etc.) on the side of mountainous highways change the spatial range of the road during driving, restricting the driver's freedom of driving while possibly triggering the driver's shy away effect, which poses a specific potential safety hazard. To understand the characteristics of driving behaviour in mountain highway tunnels with different tunnel lengths and lateral obstacles, nine tunnels in Chongqing were selected for real-vehicle tests, and data on driving trajectories, speeds and other metrics were collected from 40 drivers.

ScN/GaN(11̅00): A New Platform for the Epitaxy of Twin-Free Metal-Semiconductor Heterostructures.

Nano Lett

May 2024

Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik, Leibniz-Institut im Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V., Hausvogteiplatz 5-7, 10117 Berlin, Germany.

We study the molecular beam epitaxy of rock-salt ScN on the wurtzite GaN(11̅00) surface. To this end, ScN is grown on freestanding GaN(11̅00) substrates and self-assembled GaN nanowires exhibiting (11̅00) sidewalls. On both substrates, ScN crystallizes twin-free thanks to a specific epitaxial relationship, namely ScN(110)[001]∥GaN(11̅00)[0001], providing a congruent, low-symmetry interface.

We investigate the full and half-shells of PbSnTe topological crystalline insulator deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on the sidewalls of wurtzite GaAs nanowires (NWs). Due to the distinct orientation of the IV-VI shell with respect to the III-V core the lattice mismatch between both materials along the nanowire axis is less than 4%. The PbSnTe solid solution is chosen due to the topological crystalline insulator properties above some critical concentrations of Sn (x ≥ 0.
