Models of contagion dynamics, originally developed for infectious diseases, have proven relevant to the study of information, news, and political opinions in online social systems. Modelling diffusion processes and predicting viral information cascades are important problems in network science. Yet, many studies of information cascades neglect the variation in infectivity across different pieces of information. Here, we employ early-time observations of online cascades to estimate the infectivity of distinct pieces of information. Using simulations and data from real-world Twitter retweets, we demonstrate that these estimated infectivities can be used to improve predictions about the virality of an information cascade. Developing our simulations to mimic the real-world data, we consider the effect of the limited effective time for transmission of a cascade and demonstrate that a simple model of slow but non-negligible decay of the infectivity captures the essential properties of retweet distributions. These results demonstrate the interplay between the intrinsic infectivity of a tweet and the complex network environment within which it diffuses, strongly influencing the likelihood of becoming a viral cascade.

Background: The infectious hypothesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) suggests that microbes may play a role in pathogenesis by triggering the pathologic cascade or contributing to disease progression. Herpesviruses, such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), have been of high interest in AD and related neurodegenerative diseases, in part due to their ability to establish lifelong latent infection and potentially reactivate. However, further research is needed to fully understand the role of herpesviruses in these diseases.

Background: Apolipoprotein E4 (E4) is the strongest genetic risk factor for sporadic Alzheimer's Disease (AD), and aging is the greatest overall risk factor for AD. Many cellular and molecular changes occur within the brain throughout aging, one of which being the increased bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4) signaling. As APOE and BMPs are known to interact in non-neuronal organs, we hypothesized that enhanced BMP signaling in the brain may interact with APOE in a genotype-dependent manner to initiate or exacerbate neuropathological cascades relevant to AD.

Here, we fate map connective tissue during mouse lung fibrosis and observe disassembly and transfer of connective tissue macromolecules from pleuro-alveolar junctions (PAJs) into deep lung tissue, to activate fibroblasts and fibrosis. Disassembly and transfer of PAJ macromolecules into deep lung tissue occurs by alveolar macrophages, activating cysteine-type proteolysis on pleural mesothelium.

Data on the HIV care cascade demonstrated challenges in achieving Ending the HIV Epidemic (EHE) targets across all 18 EHE focus metropolitan areas, but innovative adherence interventions using point-of-care tenofovir testing and motivational interviewing support care cascade outcomes in Namibia and South Africa, respectively. Data on treatment with long-acting injectable (LAI) antiretroviral therapy (ART) demonstrated high acceptability, retention, and virologic suppression including in groups that were not well represented in clinical trials including persons born female and persons with detectable viral loads. The adjuvanted hepatitis B vaccine appeared to be safe and appeared to be superior to conventional hepatitis B vaccines in persons with HIV (PWH) who were prior nonresponders to the hepatitis B vaccine.

Acute hepatitis of unknown etiology (non-HepA-E hepatitis) emerged affecting children in 2021 and in parallel with the COVID-19 pandemic. In the present article, we performed an analysis between two plasma samples from pediatric patients, one with non-HepA-E hepatitis and the other healthy, to evaluate possible proteomic alterations associated with viral targets as possible causative agents and pathophysiological processes using the high-resolution and label-free LC-MS/MS technique. We identified 72 altered differentially expressed proteins, 45 upregulated and 27 downregulated.
