Microbiome and metabolome analysis in smoking and non-smoking pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma patients.

BMC Microbiol

December 2024

Department of Gastroenterology, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, 107 Wenhuaxi Road, Jinan, Shandong Province, 250012, China.

Background: Smoking is a significant risk factor for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). This study aimed to investigate the effects of smoking on the pancreatic microbiome and metabolome in resectable and unresectable male PDAC patients.

Methods: The pancreatic tissue samples were collected from resectable PDACs via surgery and unresectable PDACs via endoscopic ultrasound fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA).

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the biliary tract are extremely rare due to a paucity of Kulchitsky cells. While their preoperative diagnosis remains challenging due to the lack of specific diagnostic markers and imaging findings, there have been no detailed reports describing the diagnostic utility of various imaging modalities for bile duct NETs at the junction of the cystic and common hepatic ducts. We report a case of a woman in her 40s who presented with jaundice and elevated hepatobiliary enzymes.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance and safety of endoscopic ultrasound-guided tissue acquisition (EUS-TA) for perivascular soft-tissue cuffing (PSTC).

Methods: This single-center, retrospective study evaluated patients in whom EUS-TA was performed for PSTC in pancreatic or bile duct cancer lesions between October 2017 and March 2024. PSTC was defined as a perivascular soft-tissue area contiguous with nearby blood vessels from the suspected primary tumor.

Unveiling the Masquerade: Early Gastric Cancer Mimicking Advanced Disease with Ectopic Pancreas Intrusion.

Ann Ital Chir

December 2024

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences, University of Bologna, 40126 Bologna, Italy; General and Oncologic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Morgagni-Pierantoni Hospital, 47121 Forlì, Italy.

Gastric cancer is a significant health concern worldwide, and its diagnosis and management are of paramount importance. Ectopic pancreas (EP) refers to an embryological abnormality where healthy pancreatic tissue develops without anatomical, vascular, or neural communication with the normal pancreas. We report the case of a patient whose initial endoscopic evaluation suggested early gastric cancer, but computed tomography scan (CT scan) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) indicated a locally advanced tumor.
