Published: June 2019

A new nonlinear optical (NLO) oxysulfide, Sr Cd Sb O S , which contains the functional groups [SbO S ] (x=0, 1) with a 5s electron configuration, is synthesized by a solid-state reaction. This compound displays a phase-matchable second harmonic generation (SHG) response four times stronger than AgGaS (AGS) under laser irradiation at 2.09 μm. Single-crystal-based optical measurements reveal a SHG intensity that can be tuned by temperature and novel photoluminescence properties. Theoretical analyses demonstrate that tetragonal [SbOS ] and [SbS ] pyramids make the predominant contribution to the enhanced SHG effect. Among those, the [SbOS ] units with mixed anions make a larger contribution. This work proposes that oxysulfide groups with an ns electron configuration can serve as new functional building units in NLO materials and opens a new avenue for the design of other optoelectronic materials.

The nonlinear optical response in graphene is finding increasing applications in nanophotonic devices. The activation and enhancement of second harmonic generation (SHG) in graphene, which is generally forbidden in monolayer and AB-stacked bilayer graphene due to their centrosymmetry, is of urgent need for nanophotonic applications. Here, we present a comprehensive study of SHG performance of twisted multilayer graphene structures based on stacking engineering.

Breaking Performance Barriers in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF) Analogs by Functional Group Self-Polymerization.

Enhancing the conversion efficiency of all-solid-state lasers through the rational design of crystal materials with superior linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we present a novel approach to optimizing these properties in KBe2BO3F2 (KBBF)-analog crystals via functional group self-polymerization. This strategy led to the synthesis of two new optical crystals: noncentrosymmetric CsAs2O3Br and centrosymmetric CsAs4O6Br.

Nonlinear Optical Response of Tetrel-Modified Tetraphenyl-Adamantane Clusters.

Institut für Theoretische Physik and Center for Materials Research (LaMa), Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen, 35392 Gießen, Germany.

The second harmonic generation (SHG) properties of adamantane-based tetraphenyl clusters are predicted from first principles and analyzed on the basis of the involved electronic transitions. In particular, the effect of a tetrel substitution in the cluster core on the nonlinear optical response is investigated. Electronic transitions spatially localized at the substituents are found to be responsible for the optical nonlinearities.

Electrically switchable second harmonic generation (SHG) is highly valuable in electro-optic modulators, which can be deployed in data communication and quantum optics. Coupling circular dichroism (CD) with an electrically controlled SHG process is advantageous because it enhances the signal transmission bandwidth and security while enabling multiple modulation modes for optical logic. However, ferroelectrically switchable chiral second-order nonlinearity is rarely reported.
