Unfit cells with defective signalling or gene expression are eliminated through competition with neighbouring cells. However, physiological roles and mechanisms of cell competition in vertebrates remain unclear. In addition, universal mechanisms regulating diverse cell competition are unknown.

Homeostasis is necessary for epithelia to maintain barrier function and prevent the accumulation of defective cells. Unfit, excess, and dying cells in the larval zebrafish tail fin epidermis are removed via controlled cell death and extrusion. Extrusion coincides with oscillations of cell area, both in the extruding cell and its neighbors.

Background: Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) comprises a group of heterogeneous and aggressive haematological malignancies with unsatisfactory prognoses and limited treatment options. Treatments targeting B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) with venetoclax have been approved for patients with AML, and venetoclax-based drug combinations are becoming the standard of care for older patients unfit for intensive chemotherapy. However, the therapeutic duration of either single or combination strategies is limited, and the development of resistance seems inevitable.

Controlling the principal African malaria vector, the mosquito , is considered essential to curtail malaria transmission. However, existing vector control technologies rely on insecticides, which are becoming increasingly ineffective. Sterile insect technique (SIT) is a powerful suppression approach that has successfully eradicated a number of insect pests, yet the toolkit lacks the requisite technologies for its implementation.
