A Bacteriocin Produced by Pediococcus Species Associated with a 5.5-Megadalton Plasmid.

Agarose gel electrophoresis of plasmid DNA and plasmid-curing experiments suggested that bacteriocin activity was harbored on a plasmid of approximately 5.5 megadaltons (Mdal) in Pediococcus acidilactici PO2, B5627 and PC, and Pediococcus pentosaceus MC-03. Bacteria that were sensitive to the bacteriocin included other pediococci, Leuconostoc mesenteroides , Streptococcus faecalis and Listeria monocytogenes . Three of the five serotypes of L. monocytogenes examined were inhibited by a variant lacking the 5.5 Mdal plasmid; however, when the plasmid was present, zones of inhibition doubled in size.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) can cause chronic infections, significantly increasing the risk of death from cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A key player in chronic HBV infection is covalently closed circular DNA (cccDNA), a stable episomal form of viral DNA that acts as a persistent reservoir in infected hepatocytes and drives continuous viral replication. Despite the development of several animal models, few adequately replicate cccDNA formation and maintenance, limiting our understanding of its dynamics and the evaluation of potential therapeutic interventions targeting cccDNA.

Heparanase 2 Modulation Inhibits HSV-2 Replication by Regulating Heparan Sulfate.

The host enzyme heparanase (HPSE) facilitates the release of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) from target cells by cleaving the viral attachment receptor heparan sulfate (HS) from infected cell surfaces. HPSE 2, an isoform of HPSE, binds to but does not possess the enzymatic activity needed to cleave cell surface HS. Our study demonstrates that HSV-2 infection significantly elevates HPSE 2 protein levels, impacting two distinct stages of viral replication.

Immunization against Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH) has been successfully explored and developed for the parenteral inoculation of animals, aimed at controlling fertility, reducing male aggressiveness, and preventing boar taint. Although effective, these vaccines may cause adverse reactions at the injection site, including immunosuppression and inflammation, as well as the involvement of laborious and time-consuming procedures. Oral vaccines represent an advancement in antigen delivery technology in the vaccine industry.
